/ February 21, 2010
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona won every singles
match in straight sets and swept doubles in dominating Division-II
Grand Canyon, 7-0, Sunday morning at Flagstaff Athletic Club. The
Lumberjacks won their fourth consecutive match to improve their Big
West-leading record to 6-2 for the season.
“Grand Canyon is not a bad team; they came out and competed
harder than a lot of other teams we've played,”
director of tennis Kim Bruno said. “Our guys just stayed
focused and on top of their games and executed very well. We have
four really tough matches next week, so having a four-match winning
streak gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”
Sophomores Andrew Reiff and Robin Pezzutto played at No. 1 doubles
for the first time this season and responded with an 8-0 win,
leading a Lumberjacks sweep of doubles to open the match.
Northern Arizona won every set in singles, losing only 15 total
games in singles play. The Lumberjacks had two perfect singles
matches at No. 5 and 6, as junior David Flodberg and freshman Kevin
Taylor, respectively, posted convincing 6-0, 6-0 wins. Freshman
Hugo Ramadier moved up to No. 3 and won his fifth consecutive
match, while Reiff, Pezzutto and freshman Patrick Schimmelbauer
also claimed easy singles wins. The Lumberjacks had three matches
(No. 3, 5 and 6) that lasted less than 40 minutes
in completing a sweep.
NAU plays four matches in as many days next week in Las Cruces,
N.M., starting on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against Texas-Pan American.
