Swimming and Diving Splits in San Diego, Harris Sweeps Diving
Women's Swimming & Diving / February 06, 2010
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The
Northern Arizona swimming and diving team defeated San Diego,
169-125, and lost to San Diego State, 153-116, in the final dual
meet of the 2009-10 season on Saturday in the Aztec Aquaplex.
Junior Taryn Harris finished first on the 1-meter and 3-meter as
the Lumberjacks finished in first, second, and third on both
boards.
NAU won three swimming events and dominated on the springboards
filling up the top six spots on both the 1-meter and 3-meter. The
top three scorers for a respective team count towards its diving
total, but the Lumberjacks owned the top six spots on both
boards.
“It was good to get some sea level training and racing in
spite of the elements,” said head coach Andy Johns of the
cold, rainy, and windy conditions in San Diego. "This is a good
tuneup for the championship meet.”
Fi Connell, Rachael Foe, and Kristin Jones all recorded wins for
the Lumberjacks on Saturday. Connell finished first in the 100-yard
backstroke with a season-best 56.37. Foe won the 100-yard
butterfly, 58.63, and Jones placed first in the 400-yard individual
medley with a season-best 4:35.25.
The diving team gave the swimming team a boost sweeping both
events. Harris placed first on the 1-meter with a score of 273.30
and was first on the 3-meter with a score of 305.30.
With the dual schedule complete, the Lumberjacks are now less than
three weeks away from the WAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
NAU finished second at the meet last year.
“We feel good about our training,” Johns said.
“It all comes down to putting it together at the right place
and time. We are confident going in. We have put in the work and
the rest is just going out, having fun, and racing.”
