FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona continued its dominance
of the Big Sky and ran its home-winning streak to 11 consecutive
matches in convincing fashion, handing Montana its first Big Sky
loss with a 6-1 victory on Friday in Flagstaff Athletic Club East.
NAU won for the sixth time in its last-seven matches to improve to
7-3 overall and 3-0 in conference while Montana fell to 4-7 and 3-1
in the Big Sky.
With the Grizzlies missing their top-two players, NAU jumped on the
visitors early in sweeping doubles play. Junior Orsi Golovics and
freshman Malia Wahinepio, ranked No. 6 in the ITA Mountain Region,
claimed an 8-3 victory at No. 1, a score that was matched by the
Lumberjacks at No. 3. An 8-4 win for Northern Arizona at No. 2
concluded doubles and gave the home team the first point of the
match.
The Lumberjacks would control singles play as well, led once again
this season by the back-half of the singles rotation. Wahinepio
improved her team-best record to 8-2 for the season with a 6-2, 6-0
win over Montana's Kayla Moyse at No. 4, while freshman
Nicole Perez cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5. Like Perez, junior
Yumi Hasegawa won her sixth-consecutive match with a 6-0, 6-1
victory at No. 6. Golovics and junior Edit Suhajda battled for
straight-set wins at No. 1 and 2, respectively, while Montana
picked up its lone point in a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory from freshman
Heather Davidson at No. 3.
With a perfect 3-0 record in conference play (home wins over
Montana and Montana State, road win over Northern Colorado),
Northern Arizona moves into sole possession of first place in the
Big Sky. In conference matches, NAU has outscored its opponents
17-4, posted a 14-4 singles record and an 8-1 mark in doubles. The
Lumberjacks will play four of their last-five regular season
conference matches on the road in April, with their only remaining
home conference match against No. 34 Sacramento State to end the
regular season on April 17.
The Lumberjacks are off for spring break until Wednesday, March 24,
when they will host Rhode Island at 1 p.m. in Flagstaff Athletic
Club East.
