CHANDLER, Ariz. - Freshman
Stephanie Kim carded a two-over 74 to win the Wyoming Cowgirl
Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Resort Tuesday and help the
Lumberjacks post a school record en route a second-place finish in
the tournament in the final tune-up for the Big Sky Conference
Championships to be held April 19-21.
“Stephanie played beautifully
today,” said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. “She hit good
shots all day and made some putts while keeping herself composed
throughout.”
Kim finished at even-par 216 to
post a two-stroke victory over Britney Yada of Portland State
(218), tying the school record score for three rounds set by Lauren
Gray at the 2004 Big Sky Championships. She also set the
single-round school mark with a four-under par 68 in the first
round on Monday.
Kim's round included three
birdies, two double bogeys and one bogey. It was her second
tournament victory of her initial collegiate season, becoming the
fifth student-athlete in school history to win two or more
tournaments in their career and just the third player and first
freshman to win two tournaments in a season.
The Lumberjacks finished tied for
second with Colorado State at 33-over par 897, setting a team
record for three-round tournament. It improved the mark set earlier
this season by the squad of 900 set at the Bulldog and Eagle
Invitational during the fall season. NAU trailed only Texas-El Paso
in the standings and won a scorecard playoff with Colorado State to
claim second overall in the field of 23 teams.
“It was very fun to watch
today,” said Bedortha. “It was an impressive effort out
of the student-athletes to play that well against a good field that
included seven of the eight teams in the Big Sky Conference. Our
confidence is high going into the conference tournament.”
NAU plays host to the Big Sky
Championships at Ocotillo in two weeks where the Lumberjacks are
the defending champions in the event.
“Everyone played well,”
said Stephanie Kim. “It was really fun to have everyone have
a good round today.”
The Lumberjacks recorded strong
play across the lineup Tuesday. Junior Alexa Kim and senior Megan
Buck tied for 15th overall at 226 after rounds of
two-over par 74, while junior Bethany Leclair jumped into a tie for
25th after an even-par 72. Junior Dakin Banta also
posted a 74 in the third round to tie for 75th overall.
Three players played as individuals
in the tournament. Freshman Aleah Kim had a 76 and finished tied
for 45th, while senior Meghan Bremer posted a two-over
par 74 to finish tied for 53rd. Senior Lauren Halstead
had an 80 in the final round.
