FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern
Arizona senior David McNeill was named to the 2010 ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District men's track & field/cross
country team as selected by the College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second consecutive year. He
will now be on the national ballot with a chance to earn Academic
All-America status, an honor he garnered in 2009.
McNeill, who has a 3.75 GPA, has
been named the 2010 Mountain Region Track Athlete of the Year by
the U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association
for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, as well as the 2009 cross
country season. He will compete Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track
and Field Championships in the 5000m.
The 2010 indoor track season
culminated with McNeill claiming his first career national
championship in the men's 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor
Championships held in Fayetteville, Ark. He also finished runner-up
the following evening in the 3,000-meter run to give the
Lumberjacks 18 total points and a tie for eighth place, the highest
team finish at a track and field championship in school history.
McNeill concluded the season with the nation's fasted time in
the 5K at 13:36.41.
At the NCAA Cross Country
Championships, McNeill finished runner-up to claim his sixth
All-American Award since arriving at NAU and help lead the
men's team to a spot on the podium in fourth place. The
Australian native was once again honored by the USTFCCCA when they
honored him with the Division I Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
McNeill is the third NAU
student-athletes chosen for the ESPN the Magazine Academic
All-District squads this year, joining soccer players Kristi
Andreassen (First Team) and Rebekah Schmidt (Second Team).
