Rossini Finishes Season 12th in the Nation
/ June 09, 2010
EUGENE, Ore. - Andres Rossini of
the Northern Arizona track and field team was unable to achieve his
goal of making it into the final flight of the discus competition
at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday afternoon from Historic
Hayward Field. The junior fell just short after finishing 12th
overall, missing the cut by three spots.
"I actually wasn't as nervous as I
thought I was going to be," Rossini said about his first
championship appearance. "I got my first throw in, but then I my
last two throws and I couldn't believe I was fouling at Nationals.
It was just one of those days that it didn't happen for me."
With his first championship
appearance in the books, Rossini knows what to expect heading into
next year and cannot wait to come back stronger.
"This being my first year in
Division I from junior college, I feel I learned so much," Rossini
said. "I cannot wait for preseason training. I know for sure I will
remember this day for the rest of my college career, and I am going
to train twice, if not three times as hard to make it back here and
try to fight for a national title."
Competing in the second of two
flights, the Argentina native opened the day with his only legal
throw of 177 feet, seven inches. He would go on to foul his final
two throws of the round, finishing 12th out of 24 competitors.
Rossini was looking to become the
first All-American discus thrower for NAU since Nick Petrucci
accomplished the feat in 2000.
This wraps up a highly successful
season for Rossini which saw him win an International discus title
in South America and the first Big Sky discus title for NAU since
2000.
Tomorrow's action from Hayward
Field will feature sophomore Ahmed Osman in the 10,000-meter run as
he looks to improve upon his ninth-place finish from a season ago.
