MIRAMAR, Fla. – Ahmed Osman,
sophomore distance runner from Northern Arizona University,
captured the NACAC Under-23 10,000-meter run championship this past
weekend in a time of 30 minutes, and 38.22 seconds. It is the first
International title for the San Diego native.
"This is my first international
experience, and to win in my first race is a huge accomplishment
and honor for me," Osman said. "Competing for the USA was an
incredible honor. Being able to close out the season with a win
provides me with a lot of momentum going into next season."
The win couldn't have come at a
better time for two-time All-American, as he now can rest before
the 2010-11 school year begins in late August.
"I talked to coach Heins, and he
told me to use the race as a tempo and not to take it out too
hard," Osman said. "I was leading the whole race, but my teammate
helped me out for the last two laps, and then I took off on the
bell lap to win it."
Osman was one of two 10K runners
representing the United States in the race this past Friday. The
other three competitors were from Mexico and Costa Rica.
The NACAC Championships are held
every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North
America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Athletic
Association, which is one of six regional athletics associations
affiliated with the IAAF (International Association of Athletics
Federations), the governing body of the sport.
With his latest victory, Osman
closed out the 2010 track season having won his second All-American
honor, the Big Sky 10K title for the second-straight year and a new
personal record in the event (28:52.57) from the Mt. SAC Relays in
April.
