PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Senior Kristi
Andreassen and juniors Jenna Samora and Chelsea
Bednarz each scored twice as Northern Arizona rolled past
Embry-Riddle, 7-1, in an exhibition game Saturday evening in
Prescott. The match was the lone exhibition contest for the
Lumberjacks, who will host Arizona State next Friday, August 20, at
4 p.m. to open the regular season.
"I thought our finishing was good, but there's still a lot of
work to do and facing Arizona State will be a whole different
beast," said head coach Andre Luciano. "The result was indicative
of our ability to possess the ball. We just have to clean some
things up and increase our speed of play a little bit. Overall it
was a good performance and it was nice to get out there and face
some real competition."
Bednarz, a junior transfer from Santa Clara, opened the scoring
in the 8th minute, finishing a feed from senior Sam Monahan along the
Embry-Riddle goal line. 10 minutes later, the Lumberjacks would
strike again off a corner kick. Senior Brenna Boies sent
the corner into the goal moth and found Andreassen for a header
into the Eagle goal for a 2-0 lead.
The game featured three 30 minute periods, and NAU would tack on
a third goal just 14 seconds into the second stanza. Bednarz made a
run down the right side of the field off the kickoff, blasting a
shot from 20 yards out off the left post and into the Embry-Riddle
net. The Lumberjacks scored again just over two minutes later, as
senior Corie
McGuire had a point-blank shot stopped by Embry Riddle
goalkeeper Ciarra Pederson but NAU freshman Rebecca Berry was
in position to put home the rebound to make the score 4-0. The
Eagles would net their lone goal in the 41st minute off a corner
kick, with Whitney Desmarais finishing the play with a shot to the
bottom-right corner of the Lumberjack goal.
In the third period, Boies and Andreassen would connect for a
second time off a corner kick to extend the Lumberjack lead to 5-1.
Samora would put away a long shot in the 74th minute and would
conclude the scoring with another goal in the 79th minute to
complete a final tally of 7-1.
NAU held a 28-5 shot advantage for the game, with junior
goalkeeper Kendra Teesdale
recording two saves for the win. Bednarz finished with a game-high
seven shots with Samora notching six attempts. Desmarais and
Samantha Welch each had two shots to pace the Eagles, who have now
been out-scored by NAU 22-3 over the last-four seasons, though
Saturday's contest was the first exhibition game between the
schools.
The Lumberjacks now set their sites on hosting Arizona State
next Friday in a match between 2009 NCAA Tournament participants.
The Sun Devils claimed a 4-0 win over NAU last season in 100 degree
heat in Tempe. Admission and parking are free for Friday's contest
and all 2010 Northern Arizona home games at Lumberjack Stadium.
