Women's Soccer Stymied in 1-0 Loss at UTEP
/ August 22, 2010
EL PASO, Texas – UTEP junior goalkeeper Chandra Morden
made seven saves and the Miners scored the only goal of the game in
the 20th minute in a 1-0 shutout of Northern Arizona on Sunday
afternoon. The Lumberjacks dropped to 0-2 on the season while UTEP
earned a win in its first game of the season.
Much like Friday's contest against Arizona State, Sunday's match
was controlled by the opposition early. The Miners had the majority
of the game's early scoring chances, including a goal in the 20th
minute. UTEP junior midfielder Katie Dorman sent a cross into the
NAU goal mouth, where teammate Brittany Kindzierski was able to
one-time a shot past Lumberjack freshman goalkeeper Lauren Weaver
into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the home team the
early lead.
UTEP would continue to apply the pressure for the remainder of
the half, holding a 14-5 shot advantage in the opening stanza and
taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Lumberjacks were the aggressors early after halftime,
attempting six corner kicks in the opening 23 minutes of the second
half while not succeeding a single corner to UTEP. NAU would only
get a single shot off the series of corners, however, as senior
Brandy Carr had a try stopped by Morden in the 61st minute.
With UTEP going into a defensive shell in trying to protect
their slim lead, the Lumberjacks could only muster three more shots
for the remainder of the contest, with a final attempt from senior
Kristi Andreassen stopped by Morden in the 80th minute as UTEP held
on for the 1-0 victory.
The Miners held an 18-11 shot advantage for the game, though
they did not place a single shot on goal in the second half. Weaver
made three saves in her first-career game, while NAU senior Sam Monahan led the team offensively with three shots. UTEP had four
players attempt three shots each while succeeding eight corner
kicks and attempting just four.
The Lumberjacks continue their road swing on Friday, September
3, at Arizona at 7 p.m.
