Boies' Record Day Leads Women's Soccer to 3-2 Victory
/ September 10, 2010
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Senior Brenna Boies tied school
records for single game and career assists with three helpers and
Northern Arizona got a game winner from senior Rebekah Schmidt in
the 85th minute in a thrilling 3-2 victory Friday afternoon over
Cal State Fullerton. The Lumberjacks improved to 1-2-2 while the
Titans moved to 2-3-0.
Boies' three assists equaled the school record set by Sierra
Cristiano in a game against Southern Utah in 2003. She now has 18
assists for her career, equaling former Lumberjacks Sarah
Neatherton and Cee Cee Odorfer for the all-time program lead.
"Obviously to get this win was huge for us," said
head coach Andre Luciano. "It kind of validates all of the
hard work we've put in and how we were able to finally close
a game out. Cal State Fullerton is an extremely physical and
talented team and it was a very well played game so I'm happy
with then win "
Early domination by the Lumberjacks on the Titan's half of the
field led to a quick lead for NAU.A throw in for the Lumberjacks
deflected to Boies, who found open space atop the Fullerton box to
send a feed to junior Lauren Zallis for a finish to the bottom left
and a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
Four minutes later the Titans nearly tied the score as senior
Christina Murillo got open to the left of the NAU goal, had a shot
hit the right post, and then had her own rebound try stopped by NAU
freshman goalie Lauren Weaver.
The teams would share errant shot attempts for the remainder of
the half, with the Lumberjacks allowing only a single shot on goal
in the opening stanza as NAU maintained a 1-0 lead into the
intermission.
The field began to tilt the Titans way to start the second half,
and they would find the equalizer in the 56th minute. Sophomore
Jennifer Smith found open space down the right side of the field
and sent a cross into the box that found the head of Murillo for a
goal to tie the game.
Just over two minutes later, Northern Arizona would use a
similar script to regain the lead. A corner kick from Boies lofted
perfectly to the head of senior Kristi Andreassen for her
team-leading third goal of the season and a 2-1 Lumberjack
lead.
In the 67th minute, Cal State Fullerton had a pair of attempts
in front of the goal, with a deflection by sophomore Brisa Gonzalez
headed for the goal before Andreassen booted it out of play. The
Titans would convert on a corner kick in the 80th minute, with
junior Caitlin Mellano sending the feed off junior Casey Folk to
freshman Nikki McCants, who one-timed a shot past Lauren Weaver to
even the score.
The Lumberjacks looked to be headed to their third-straight
overtime game but would net the game winner with just 5:11
remaining in regulation. Boies corralled the ball on the left side
of the box and sent a cross that deflected off Zallis and found
Schmidt, who finished past Titan goalkeeper Jordan Santos to give
NAU its first win of the season.
Weaver made two saves for her first-career victory and
Andreassen paced the team offensively with three shots.
NAU continues play in the Trojan Invitational on Sunday against
host USC at 1:30 p.m.
