BOIES TALKS ABOUT BREAKING ASSIST RECORD
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior Brenna Boies
established a new program record with her 19th career assist,
setting up senior Kristi
Andreassen in the seventh minute for the only goal of the game
in a 1-0 NAU victory over Air Force. The Lumberjacks improved to
2-3-2 while the Falcons dropped to 5-3-1
Boies tied the previous record of 18 career assists, originally
established by Cee Cee Odorfer and equaled last season by Sarah
Neatherton, with three assists in the Lumberjacks 3-2 win over Cal
State Fullerton last Friday. She entered the season with 15 career
assists after leading the Big Sky with eight assists in 2009.
"It's really exciting to be up there with Cee Cee and Sarah
Neatherton to hold that record," said Boies after the game.
"Hopefully I'll get some more and set the bar a little higher."
The record-setting helper came on an early goal that would hold
up as the game winner. Boies attempted a corner kick and sent it
short to senior Brandy Carr, who fed
back to Boies to the right of the box. The Huntington Beach, Calif.
native sent a perfect cross to the left post, where Andreassen dove
to head the ball past Air Force goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh and give
the Lumberjacks the early lead.
The Lumberjacks would continue to control play for the majority
of the first half, allowing only one Air Force shot on goal in
taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Falcons would get their
best chance to even the score. Sophomore Stephanie Patterson took a
pass in front of the NAU goal and was denied on a sliding save by
NAU goalkeeper Lauren Weaver. The
freshman netminder remained down on the field, however, as a
scramble ensued in front of the goal before Patterson had a second
shot blocked out of bounds by the Lumberjack defense. Weaver would
have to leave the game following the play, with junior Tori Rocke playing the
final 35 minutes of the contest.
In the 74th minute, NAU junior forward Carolyn Savage had
a header attempt stopped by Stambaugh but the rebound came to
teammate Corie
McGuire. The Lumberjack senior fired a shot that looked to be
goal-bound but was blocked by an Air Force defender and cleared
from danger.
The Falcons would have one more quality scoring chance in the
85th minute, after a save by Rocke led to an Air Force corner kick.
The corner from Patterson would be deflected straight up in the air
in front of the NAU goal, and a wild scramble ensued before the
ball was partially cleared and a shot from Falcon freshman Kaleigh
Moses sailed high. Air Force would scramble for a final corner kick
with the seconds winding down but could not get a shot away before
the buzzer sounded and the Lumberjacks completed a hard-fought
victory.
Weaver made three saves for her second-career victory while
Rocke made one stop in relief. Stambaugh made six saves to keep her
team close while Patterson led all players with four shots.
Northern Arizona returns to the field tomorrow for a 4 p.m.
match with Southern Utah at Lumberjack Stadium.
