Volleyball Evens Big Sky Record at 1-1, Beats Weber State 3-1

OGDEN, Utah – Northern
Arizona volleyball registered its first Big Sky Conference win
defeating Weber State, 3-1, at Swenson Gym on Saturday. The
Lumberjacks won for the second consecutive time at Weber State by
sets of 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, and 25-23.
In the first set, NAU (5-7, 1-1
BSC) came back from an early deficit to tie the score at 6-6.
Weber State (2-10, 0-1 BSC) went on a five-point run but NAU was
able to slowly cut down the lead. Two late kills from junior
Kobi Christensen helped push the Lumberjacks to a first set
win.
Weber State evened the match at 1-1
in the second set outhitting NAU .231 to .087. The
Lumberjacks trailed early in the second as well but once again were
able to come back forcing several ties and lead changes.
Unlike the first, the Wildcats closed the set on a 7-1 run after
NAU led 19-18.
The third set opened in line with
the previous two before the Lumberjacks put together a 9-0 run with
the score tied at 7-7. NAU kept its lead and closed the set
with a double digit win.
The Lumberjacks clinched the match
in the fourth in the closest set of the night with no team holding
more than a two point lead. The set produced 17 ties and six
lead changes. NAU took the lead for good after senior Chelsea Cheeley put the Lumberjacks up 22-21 with one of her eight kills on
the night.
Sophomore Kelli Dallmann turned in
a match-high 47 assists for NAU feeding Christensen and Niki Small
who led the Lumberjacks on Saturday in kills and hitting
percentage, respectively. Christensen posted her second
double-double of the year with 15 kills and 13 digs while Small
totaled 11 kills hitting .304 on the night.
Sophomore Jen Wilson also turned in
big numbers with 13 kills and a .286 hitting percentage.
NAU posted a .203 team hitting
percentage and kept Weber State under .200 for a team hitting
percentage of .189. The Lumberjacks hit over .200 in three
out of the four sets and adjusted to Weber State's strong
hitting in the first and second sets to ensure the win.
The Lumberjacks next match will be
at home in the Rolle Activity Center on Saturday, September 25
against Sacramento State. The match is schedule for a 7 p.m.
start.
