Rocke Ties Shutout Record as Soccer Upsets Loyola Marymount 2-0
/ September 26, 2010
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Junior goalkeeper Tori Rocke tied the
NAU record with her 13th career solo shutout and the Lumberjacks
used two first half goals to upset Loyola Marymount, whose only
previous losses this season were against ranked teams, 2-0. NAU
moved to 4-3-2 after its third-straight shutout while Loyola
Marymount dropped to 7-3-0.
Rocke was mostly untested Sunday, needing to make just three
saves for her 13th career solo shutout. That number equals the
record set by Liz Winkelblech in 2007. Counting last-weekends
shutout of Air Force, in which Rocke came in after freshman keeper
Lauren
Weaver sustained an injury, she now has a program record 14
total shutouts.
Loyola Marymount entered Sunday's game having allowed only one
goal in its last-six contests and only five goals all season. The
Lumberjacks were undaunted, however, and came out firing early.
Junior Jenna
Samora had a shot stopped on a superb diving save by LMU
freshman goalkeeper Brittany Jagger in the 17th minute, as NAU had
eight quick shots before scoring their first goal in the 23rd
minute.
Senior defender Kristi
Andreassen was awarded a free kick roughly 40 yards from the
Loyola Marymount goal and sent a bouncing shot on target. Jagger
made the initial stop by fellow senior Brenna Boies was in
position to knock in the rebound and give the Lumberjacks a 1-0
lead on the first goal LMU had allowed since losing 1-0 to then No.
3 Notre Dame on September 12.
Rocke would make her best save of the day on a diving stop in
the 25th minute on a shot from LMU freshman scoring leader Tawni
Martino. The Lumberjacks would continue to apply pressure on both
sides of the field and found a second goal in the 38th minute.
Senior Brandy
Carr sent a pass from the left of the LMU box to oncoming
senior Corie
McGuire, who fired a perfect one time shot past a lunging
Jagger into the top-right corner. Loyola Marymount had only allowed
two goals in a game once before this year, in their season opener
at No. 16 Cal, and the Lumberjacks would take their 2-0 advantage
into the halftime break.
Despite continuing to play aggressively on the offensive end,
Northern Arizona remained cautious on defense in protecting its
two-goal cushion in the second half. The Lumberjack defense allowed
only two LMU shots in the second half and Rocke had to make just
one second half save to maintain the clean sheet and a 2-0
victory.
"We came out with great energy and stuck to the game plan," said
head coach Andre Luciano. "We knew that we had to put pressure on
them early and that their goalkeeper made a lot of saves but had a
tendency to give up rebounds. We came out against a top team in the
West region and a team with a high RPI (Ratings Percentage Index)
and did well. To get this win and be at 4-3-2 with the difficult
schedule that we have had is good."
The Lumberjacks held a 12-4 shot advantage in the first half and
had a 15-6 edge in shots for the game. Jagger, who entered the game
with a 0.56 goals against average, made four saves while allowing
two scores. Andreassen and senior midfielder Sam Monahan paced the
Lumberjack offense with three shots apiece.
Northern Arizona plays its final non-conference game against
another West Coast Conference team next Friday, as the Lumberjacks
will host San Francisco at 3 p.m. in Lumberjack Stadium.
