Women's Volleyball / September 03, 2010
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Junior Kobi
Christensen totaled 20 kills with a .533 hitting percentage to
lift Northern Arizona women's volleyball to its first home victory
over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 3-1, at the Rolle Activity
Center on Friday. With the win, Christensen put the
Lumberjacks in contention for their 11th team title at the 18th
Annual Fiesta Bowl Tournament.
"The team played hard at the end
and showed a lot of heart after losing the third set," said head
coach Craig Choate. "They had a good performance, and Kobi
played a great game for us."
NAU (2-3) opened a 2-0 lead,
winning the opening sets 25-20 and 25-16. As a team, the
Lumberjacks hit .269 in the first set and a season-high .375 in the
second.
"We got off to a nice start, but
made some mistakes after that," Choate said. "That is going
to happen when you have freshman and sophomores out there. We
are going to need to grind out wins and we did that tonight."
Texas A&M Corpus Christi (1-4)
won the third set, 25-20, but NAU answered in the fourth and
deciding set. Christensen turned in seven of her 20 kills in
the fourth set pushing NAU to a 25-22 win. On the night, she
converted 20-of-30 attacks for a .533 hitting percentage. Her
kill total and hitting percentage were both career highs.
"It was an amazing feeling to have
the crowd behind us," said Christensen. "Kelli (Dallmann) did
a great job and the team played really well tonight. We need
to rest up and get ready for tomorrow."
Dallmann collected a match-high 46
assists (11.5 aps) while Anna Gott led
defensively with 20 digs (5.0 dps). Lauren Campbell
posted her first double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11
digs.
The Lumberjacks play two matches on
Saturday, September 4 to close out the Fiesta Bowl
Tournament. NAU faces Rider (1-1) at noon followed by
Maryland Eastern Shore (1-4) at 7 p.m. in the tournament
finale. Rider defeated UMES in Friday's early match, 3-0.
