Women's Soccer Loses Lead Again, Ties New Mexico State 1-1
/ September 05, 2010
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NAU junior Carolyn Savage
scored her first goal of the season, but for the second-consecutive
game the Lumberjacks were unable to hold on to an early lead in an
eventual 1-1 tie against New Mexico State. Northern Arizona is now
0-2-2 for the season while New Mexico State moved to 2-1-2.
The Aggies had a chance to score early, as freshman Kristen
Powers hit the crossbar just past the five minute mark. NAU got its
first chance in the seventh minute as junior Jenna Samora had a
try denied by New Mexico State freshman goalie Mikaela Bitner. The
teams would trade unsuccessful corner kicks into the final minute
of the first half, when the Lumberjacks would finally crack the
ice.
After a foul was called on New Mexico State, NAU senior Kristi
Andreassen sent a ball onto the left side of the box. The feed
found Savage, who was able to fire past Bitner to give the
Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Aggies came out strong in the second half, forcing
Lumberjack freshman goalkeeper Lauren Weaver to
make a pair of saves in the opening three minutes of the second
stanza. Aggie sophomore Crystal Burns hit the crossbar in the 53rd
minute, and the home team would continue on the attack until
finally finding the equalizer in the 65th minute. A feed from Burns
found sophomore Yolanda McMillion on the right side of the box, and
her shot over Weaver and into the NAU net would knot the score at
1-1.
Northern Arizona would have a flurry of scoring chances with
four shots and a corner kick during a three minute period into the
76th minute but could not find a go-ahead goal. The Aggies'
McMillion would hit the crossbar and Weaver would deny NMSU's Mary
Kate Koziol in the final minute of regulation to send the game to
overtime.
NAU's Samora and freshman Alana D'Onofrio
would attempt the only shots in the first overtime as the game
would be extended into a second extra session. The Lumberjacks
would also have a 4-0 shot advantage in the second overtime, and
were playing a man up after New Mexico State's Nina Yanes was given
a second yellow card in the 97th minute, but were unable to find a
winner as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
New Mexico State held a 22-19 shot advantage for the contest,
paced by Burns with four shots. NAU was led in shots by senior Sam Monahan with
six tries while Weaver made a career-high nine saves in the
contest. The Lumberjacks had a 6-0 shot advantage in the two
overtimes but could not find the back of the net.
The Lumberjacks head to Los Angeles next weekend for a pair of
games, opening with a neutral site contest against Cal State
Fullerton next Friday at 1 p.m.
