Football's Curry-Chapman Invited to Dixie Gridiron Classic
/ January 12, 2011
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Senior wide receiver Daiveun Curry-Chapman has been invited to play in the Dixie Gridiron Classic hosted by Dixie State College on Feb. 5.
"I am very excited," said Curry-Chapman. "Not a lot of guys get a chance to play in an All-Star game and showcase their talents. It is an honor to play in the game. I look forward to playing at the next level and it has been my dream. It is a step towards that."
The inaugural Dixie Gridiron Classic Game will be played at Dixie State College in St. George Utah. The Classic will have 90 of the top college athletes from around the Western States and the Pacific and Mountain squads will be coached by former NFL players and college coaches.
Curry-Chapman has been working out in California with former NFL player Jason David, who played with the Lions, Saints and Colts during his career.
"There are going to be a good number of scouts there," said Curry-Chapman. "I had a pretty good season this year but I think I was under the radar a little bit and a lot of scouts don't know about me. To be able to go out and play in this game will give me a chance to showcase myself and show I can play with anybody."
The Corona, Calif., native led the Big Sky in receptions per game with 6.3 and ranked sixth in receiving yards per game at 67.1, recording team-best totals for receptions (69), receiving yards (738) and receiving touchdowns (6). Five of his six touchdowns came in Big Sky play and he finished the season strong with back-to-back 100-yard games against Weber State and Portland State to end the season. He had a single-game career-high with 155 yards on nine catches with two touchdowns against the Vikings and grabbed a career-best 10 catches against Weber State.
Curry Chapman got his degree in communications from NAU in December, becoming the first male in his family to earn his college degree.
"It gives me an opportunity to have something to fall back on if football does not work out," said Curry-Chapman. "I am the first male in my family to get their degree so that means a lot to me. I have been able to set the standard of what the other guys in my family have to live up to."
There are four other Division I College Football All-Star games; Senior Bowl, East-West Shrine Game, Texas vs. Nation, and the Eastham Energy College All Star Game.
