FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Several Northern Arizona senior football players will take their first step towards potential professional football careers on March 23 at the school's annual pro day to be held on campus. Quarterback Michael Herrick, wide receiver Daiveun Curry-Chapman and safety Matt Estrada highlight a group of players expected to work out for the scouts.
Herrick has been working out at ProActive Sports Performance in Westlake Village, Calif., with trainer Ryan Capretta.
"My training in California has gone well," said Herrick. "I have had a lot of fun and have gotten better as a football player and I am stronger and more explosive as an athlete. I could not imagine working anywhere else and hope that throughout my career that I can continue working with Ryan and the people at ProActive."
Herrick has joined a group of former collegiate players at ProActive, working out twice a day, five days a week. His workout partners include Casey Matthews from the University of Oregon, Rick Elmore from University of Arizona, Duke Lemmens from University of Florida, Sean Creadick from UC Davis and Jordan La Secla from San Jose St. University.
Herrick and his agent have received interest from teams from both the NFL and CFL.
"There have been a handful of teams from the CFL and NFL that have confirmed with my agent that they will be attending my pro day," said Herrick. "I hope more show up and there are a lot of them to see my teammates and I compete and have some fun."
Herrick graduated from NAU with a degree in fire science in December. He finished his career as the all-time career leader in completion percentage (65.0) and yards per attempts (7.5), while placing in the top 10 in several categories including touchdowns (5th, 40), passing yards (5th, 6,460), pass completions (5th, 561) and pass attempts (6th, 863). He had 16 games with 200 or more yards in his career, six games with 300 or more yards and two games of 400 or more yards, throwing for a school-record 574 yards and four touchdowns against Eastern Washington in 2009.
"I expect to showcase my talents and the hard work I have put in the last 3 months," said Herrick. "I hope that I can gain attention from teams and hopefully make them feel confident investing in me."
