Q&A: Former Quarterback Lance Kriesien
/ January 26, 2012
BELGRADE, Serbia - Former Lumberjack football standout Lance Kriesien has signed with the Belgrade (Serbia) Vukovi to play for the Serbian champs after playing last season in Brisbane, Australia. The Vokivi compete in the Serbian Super League (SAAF) and Central European League (CEFL). They have won titles in the SAAF Serbian Superleague Champions (2009, 2010, 2011) and Central European Football League Champions (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011).
Kriesien, who hails from Houston, Texas, finished his career ninth on the career passing list for 3,522 yards, ninth in total offense with 4,704 yards, ninth in passing attempts with 507 and ninth in completions with 298. He contributed 38 touchdowns including 15 rushing, 21 passing and four receiving in 33 career games and he rushed for a quarterback school record 1,182 yards in his career.
Lance answered from questions from NAU Media Relations Director Steve Shaff about his experience playing football overseas.
Tell us about the team in Australia and how the season went in 2011?
"Playing in Australia was a great experience and one I will always be grateful for. Australia has a lot of athletes that can compete here in the States at a high level. The club I played for, the Brisbane Wildcats, has a long tradition in the state of Queensland as being one of the better "gridiron" programs in the area. Though we fell short of our ultimate goal, we had a successful season."
What was it like living in Australia?
"Australia is a well established country with a healthy economy, great people, and a laid back atmosphere. The weather was similar to that of California and Brisbane was vibrant. The seasons are opposite of what we have here, so spending New Years Eve/Day on the beach in shorts and sandals was a trip for me!"
What is the most exciting aspect of playing football overseas?
"By far the best part about being overseas is meeting new people and experiencing a different culture. We as Americans definitely have our own thing going on so it is good to go out and experience first-hand how others live. Football is not the same as it is here, but the guy's passion for the game would rival any."
What is the most challenging aspect of playing football overseas?
"I would say the most challenging aspect would be the gaps in experience and understanding. I think we take advantage of the amount of coaching and exposure to the game we have grown up with. The guys over there have not been so lucky; as you teach concepts and coach technique, you notice a few deficiencies from time to time. The challenge is cultivating the raw talent."
You recently signed to play in Serbia. What brought new opportunities does this team present for our football career?
"The Belgrade Vukovi have won 3 straight championships and are regarded as a top 25 team in Europe - their success cannot be ignored. They are well orchestrated organization who can offer quality coaching/direction to their athletes. The head coach left the University of Colorado to pursue opportunities in Serbia, as well as former NFL RB Reuben Droughns. In Belgrade, I have found a unique opportunity to grow as a player and coach."
The Belgrade team was the Serbian champions last year?
"Yes. They have won three consecutive championships."
What are your expectations in joining this team?
"The team is well established so I will be working towards finding my role as a player to help this team repeat as champions once again. I am looking forward to bringing my passion of the game, knowledge, and abilities to the team – it's a privilege to be in this situation. And if I get to have a little fun along the way I don't mind!"
