FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Rich Scangarello and Jeff Lewis have both been hired to join the Northern Arizona football staff, Head Coach Jerome Souers announced.
Scangarello will take over the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach duties for the departed Brian Lindgren, who took a similar position at San Jose State.
Scangarello served as the co-offensive coordinator at UC Davis for the 2008 season, leading an offense that ranked 11th in the Football Championship Subdivision in total offense at 426.5 yards per game, while scoring 28.5 points per game. He originally joined the Davis staff in 2005 as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, serving in that role from 2005-2007.
"Rich Scangarello is a great teacher, believes in the academic-athletic model and has coached in a system very similar to ours," said Head Coach Jerome Souers. "He has diverse experience at all levels from the NFL to the small college and I think he can reach different kids at different abilities. I think his leadership will compliment the personnel we have on offense."
Scangarello was on the Oakland Raiders staff as the assistant quarterbacks coach and offensive quality control assistant for the 2009 season. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. He also served on the Idaho staff for two stints in 2000 and 2002-03, coaching Lindgren during his college career.
"We bring back a lot of starters on offense and have great staff chemistry," said Souers. 'I think Rich is going to be a great fit."
Lewis joins the staff as the wide receivers coach, replacing Francis St. Paul. Lewis is a member of the NAU Hall of Fame after a standout career for the Lumberjacks from 1992-95. He played in the NFL for the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints from 1997-2002 after being a fourth round selection of the Broncos in the 1996 Draft. He was part of two Super Bowl teams during his career.
"We have tried to maintain a link to our history and the traditions of Northern Arizona University," said Souers. "What made Jeff Lewis a great player in college and the NFL was his passion for the game. He has always been a great competitor and remains a driven competitor today. He brings an ability reach and develop this generation of student-athletes and his influence will be tremendous."
Lewis finished his impressive career at Northern Arizona ranked second on the school's all-time lists for passing yards (9,639), touchdowns (67), completions (785) and attempts (1,315). His 59.6 pass completion percentage ranks second in Lumberjack annals, and was the end result of a four-year progression in completion percentage: 52.8%, 56.4%, 60.4% and 66.8 %. He holds the NCAA Division I-AA career record for interception avoidance with a figure of 1.82. Lewis earned third-team All-America and second-team All-Big Sky honors as a junior in 1994.
Lewis' previous coaching experience includes three seasons at the University of Louisville. He was the offensive administration assistant in 2007 and 2008 before being promoted to wide receivers coach in 2009. He served as assistant football coach at Prescott High School last season, coaching the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
