The Northern Arizona football team is currently conducting fall practice in preparation for the season opener against Arizona State on Aug. 30. Meet the Lumberjack newcomers who have joined the program and look to make an impact on the field this season in a series of profiles. Today: Justin Jungblut.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Justin Jungblut wants to prove he can play football. After a stellar high school career, he joins the Northern Arizona program after seeing limited action in three seasons at Boise State.

"Things at Boise did not work out," said Jungblut, who was an all-state selection at Saguaro High School. "My career there consisted of four games and four tackles. Coach Baker and Thompson brought me here. I am so blessed to be here now. Things turn out for a reason and I am here to help this team win."

He helped lead his high school team to three straight state football championships, earning first-team all-state defensive line by four publications. During his senior season, he recorded 72 tackles, including 23 tackles-for-loss, 12 sacks, one safety and one fumble recovery.

Jungblut worked out all summer in Flagstaff and attended classes, getting a chance to get to know his new teammates and campus.

"It started out being here every day over the summer and working hard to be in the best shape I have ever been entering fall camp," said Jungblut. "The defense is flying around well. We are doing good things but we need to keep working."

Defensive line coach Travis Baker sees the potential in the transfer, who joins a new-look group featuring seven new student-athletes to the position group this fall.

"He is a big, strong physical presence," said Baker. "I have noticed he does a good job of getting off of blocks. He is explosive with his hands. He has quick hands. He is going to be a huge part of what we are doing. He has a long way between now and the first game. But what I have seen so far, I think he is going to play a big factor in our defensive line this year.

The defense showcased its potential in the first scrimmage Friday, forcing nine sacks. It was an early indication of the effect the Lumberjack defense could have this season.

"I think we are going to have a big impact," said Jungblut. "It starts up front. Defense wins championships and if you get that you have a stout defensive line. I think that is what we are going to have this year, passionate guys that are going to play hard and are smart."

Jungblut wants to prove his worth on the field.

"I bring a lot of athleticism, speed and hard work," said Jungblut. "I love to work hard. Passion and proving people wrong, letting people know I am a good football player."
