Estrada to Make Season Debut in Mountain T's This Weekend

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The annual Mountain T's Invitational, Northern Arizona University's only two-day home meet of it's 2013 indoor slate, is always sure to bring top-notch competition to the Walkup Skydome, and the event Friday and Saturday in the Walkup Skydome will be no different. Lumberjack senior Diego Estrada headlines that talent for NAU, as he readies to make his season debut in the men's mile.

"Traditionally, the Mountain T's is a very large meet," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "You might have an Olympian in one event, and an All-American or a national champion competing in another, and overall we typically attract a lot of post-collegiates and unattached athletes as well as some very strong and high-profile track and field programs."

Incidentally, Estrada meets a couple of those criteria, having competed in the 10,000 meters at the 2012 London Olympics as a member of Team Mexico, and considering he's returning to collegiate competition for the first time since capturing a pair of All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs.

Estrada isn't the only Olympian competing, however. Stanford alum Katerina Stefanidi will compete in the pole vault after representing Greece at the Olympics in August. Additionally, spectators can witness another Olympian compete in 60-meter dash competitor Leroy Dixon, who also won a World Championship in the 4x100-meter relay in 2007 with Team USA.

For NAU specifically, Lumberjack women's 60-meter dash record-holder Isatu Fofanah once again will have a chance to best her own record, as she did two weeks ago at the NAU Invitational, but will have a host of competition from teammates Darriel Banks and Shamelle Pless, as well as the other 35 event entries for the meet title.

Also on the women's side, senior Agnes Laurent hopes to capture her second-straight meet title in the 800 meters, but will be challenged on the team by Rochelle Kanuho and Rolonda Jumbo, both of whom typically compete in the longer distances.

The men's 800-meter run is similar, as NAU sophomore Caleb Potts is joined in the race by freshman Matt League and 2012 Big Sky Outdoor 5,000-meter champion Caleb Hoover. Lumberjack senior Myles Kloer, who won the event at the NAU Invitational two weeks ago, will look to fare well once again in the race.

In the high jump, both Lauren Laszczak and Deante Kemper will face healthy competition from Arizona State athletes Keia Pinnick and Bryan McBride, respectively. Kemper will be looking to match his PR of 7 feet, 2.25 inches and reach a height above seven feet for the third meet in a row, while Laszczak builds off momentum from a personal-best jump of 5-8 at the last home meet.

In the throws, redshirt freshman Brian Thompson will look for an elusive Big Sky Conference qualifier in the men's weight throw in just his third-career meet. His best mark to date came at the season-opening Lumberjack Team Challenge, where he tossed a personal best of 55-6.5 (16.93m), falling just three inches short of the conference qualifying mark.

The Lumberjacks will also debut its first multi-event athlete in several years this weekend, as freshman Jade Childs competes in her first collegiate indoor pentathlon. Childs is currently 16th on the Big Sky standings in the 60-meter hurdles with a season best of 9.20 in the event.

The two-day event will feature the pentathlon and heptathlon beginning at 9:20 a.m. Friday with the women's 60-meter hurdles. Individual events get underway with the women's pole vault at 4 p.m. that evening. The heptathlon will wrap up on Saturday with its final three events, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday's individual field events begin at 9 a.m. with the women's shot put, followed by the running events at 11.
