Kemper Nabs Third Big Sky Weekly Honor After Big Weekend
/ February 05, 2013
OGDEN, Utah - Northern Arizona University high jumper Deante Kemper earned his third Big Sky Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor of the 2013 season, the league announced Tuesday, after a stellar performance Saturday at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff.
On Saturday, Kemper tied his lifetime best in the high jump clearing 7 feet, 2.25 inches on his third and final attempt to win the event. It was the highest Kemper had jumped since last indoor season, and moved him into contention for an NCAA Championship berth with the 13th-best mark in the country. Kemper was also the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 8.13@.
"Deante looked great (on Saturday), and the attempts that he had at (the final height of) 7-3 were good attempts, so I think it's only a matter of time before he clears that," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "Going up against an All-American like Bryan McBride of ASU and beating him, and after his finish in the hurdles, Deante was walking around afterwards with a big smile on his face, so I think he's heading in the right direction."
Kemper's consistency in 2013 has been his biggest asset so far. The San Diego, Calif. native has gone over seven feet in all three of his meets this year, and has lowered his 60-meter dash time in two of those meets to boot.
He'll have a shot to make it four in a row, and just maybe break the school record of 7-3.25 while he's at it, this weekend while competing at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
