Track's Weise Named Capital One Academic All-District

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – NAU sophomore thrower Jessica Weise has been selected as a Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women's Track & Field Second-Team honoree, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.

The Capital One Academic All-District Teams, selected by CoSIDA at the conclusion of each athletic season, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Student-athletes who competed in the 2013 outdoor track and field season were eligible for the awards based on significant athletic and academic achievements.

Weise, who carries a cumulative GPA of 3.40 and is majoring in sociology, was the only Lumberjack athlete to be honored for track and field. Idaho State's Hayli Worthington, North Dakota's Kirsten Haas, and Weber State's Sarah Callister and Amber Henry were the only other Big Sky Conference athletes to make the list.

Weise, a sophomore from Riverside, Calif., saw her first collegiate competition with the Lumberjacks during the 2012 outdoor season. She steadily improved throughout her freshman year and ultimately finished 11th in the shot put at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

She only got better heading into the 2013 indoor season, which culminated with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw (55-9.25/17.00m) and a ninth-place mark in the shot put (44-4.75/13.53m) at the conference indoor meet in Bozeman, Mont.

The biggest highlight of Weise's two years at NAU also happens to be her most recent. Weise took home a gold medal in the shot put at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships with a career-best throw of 49 feet, 11.75 inches (15.23m) May 11 in Portland, Ore.

Weise narrowly missed advancing to last weekend's NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, but she still finished the outdoor season ranked 50th in the NCAA West Region.

Weise joins five other Lumberjack athletes as Capital One Academic All-District honorees for the 2012-13 school year. Diane Buzzard (soccer), Elinor Priest (soccer), Rachel Palmer (swimming & diving), Jake Hess (football), and Austin Hasquet (football) all were given the award following their respective seasons as well.
