Men's Tennis Heads to Vegas for ITA Mountain Regionals
/ October 14, 2014
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team found some success in their previous fall tournament at the University of New Mexico Balloon Invitational and now the Lumberjacks will head to Las Vegas, Nev. for the ITA Mountain Regional Championships.
"We did a good job in Albuquerque and now we need to build off of that," said head coach Ki Kroll. "We have been working hard this past week and now it is time to get some positive results. I expect us to perform fairly well."
In Kroll's first season last year as head coach for Northern Arizona he saw some positive results from senior Jordan Gobatie and will now look for even more players to step up in his second season.
"I want to build off of last year," said Kroll. "Last year we had one or two positive results and this year I am looking for even more. Even though we are bringing some freshmen to this tournament, it will be interesting to see how we can compete against some of the top teams in our region."
Making the trip to Las Vegas, Nev. will be seniors Kester Black and Gobatie, sophomore Alex Locci and freshmen Tomas Hons, Felix Schumann and Adi Zilberstein.
"Each tournament has been a learning experience," said Kroll. "I know the young guys were probably nervous their first tournament and even their second but I am pleased with the improvements they are making. It will be interesting to see how we fit in with the top players in our region and how our lineup will shape out."
Schumann is coming off a first place finish in the Silvers Draw at the New Mexico Balloon Invitational where the native of Germany went 4-0. Every Lumberjack that traveled to New Mexico earned a win in singles play. Locci went 3-1 in doubles play and posted a 3-2 record in singles play. Zilberstein went 2-2 in the Cherry Draw with wins over Andrew Parks of the Air Force Academy and New Mexico State's Strahinja Trecakov.
Regionals will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at UNLV and will last until Sunday, Oct. 19.
