NAU Impressive at ITA Mountain Regional Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team had an impressive showing at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships this past weekend where the Lumberjacks had eight wins in singles play.
"I thought we represented NAU well," said head coach Ki Kroll. "We had some really good wins and I am proud of our players."
Senior Kester Black picked up four wins in singles play during the weekend as he closed out Friday's play going 2-0 with wins over Utah State's Jack Swindells 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Utah's Matt Cowley 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"Kester had a very good tournament getting to the consolation semis," said Kroll. "It really helps our team having a senior of his ability setting the standard. I was very happy with his performance."
Freshman Felix Schumann continues to impress in his first collegiate fall schedule at Northern Arizona going 3-2 throughout the weekend in singles play. In his first match in Las Vegas, Schumann defeated New Mexico State's Tom Douglas 6-3, 6-2 and on Thursday, the native of Germany defeated Air Force Academy's Dillon Launius 6-4, 6-0. Schumann's last win came on Friday against Big Sky opponent Harry James from Montana State in two 6-4 sets.
"Felix continues to improve with every tournament," said Kroll. "He is very committed to his game, and representing NAU. I look forward to his continued success."
Sophomore Alexandre Locci picked up two wins against Utah State's Marcus Fritz 7-6, 6-2 and Tomas Cosmai 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Locci and senior Jordan Gobatie picked up the Lumberjacks' first win in doubles play on Wednesday over Montana's pair of Semion Branzburg and Alexandr Rudenco by a score of 8-5.
Ever pair of NAU won a match in doubles play this weekend as Black and Schumann defeated Montana State's Harry James and Niklas Brandes 8-5. NAU's final pair, Tomas Hons and Adi Zilberstein, had to square off against their teammates Gobatie and Locci to get their lone win in doubles play.
Northern Arizona will now take this week off from play before heading back Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV Easley Fall Invitational beginning on Friday, Oct. 31 on the campus of UNLV.
