PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team wrapped up their fall schedule staying in-state at the Grand Canyon Invitational. This was the final tournament for the Lumberjacks this fall as they competed in five invitationals this year.
"We competed very well in the Grand Canyon Invitational," said head coach Ki Kroll. "I was satisfied with our performances; overall we fought hard, so that is good."
Jordan Gobatie started off his tournament with a win in Flight One over Air Force's Jack McCullers and would eventually play for third place in the flight. Gobatie faced a tough opponent in Tyler Pham from UC Irvine and would fall to Pham in two sets for third place. Alexandre Locci picked up two wins in singles play over Abilene Christian's Nico Agritelley in a tough three-set match and also over Nevada's Mile Cilic in two sets. Gobatie and Locci shared the court together in doubles play and faced a familiar opponent in Dillon Launius and Grant Taylor from Air Force. Gobatie and Locci were able to take down the Air Force duo 8-6.
Jackson Lee was able to pick up a win over an Air force opponent in Andrew Parks. After dropping his first match to open the tournament, Lee responded with a win over a tough opponent in a tough three-set match. Lee took the first set 6-4 and battled in the second set but fell to Parks 7-6 and with the match on the line, Lee took care of Parks 10-3 to win the match.
This wraps up the Lumberjacks' fall schedule as NAU competed in two tournaments in New Mexico, two tournaments in Las Vegas, Nev. and the final tournament in Arizona.
"I thought it was a good fall season," said Kroll. "Each player got better with all the competitive matches we were able to play. Everyone is excited about the spring, so we'll see what happens."
Northern Arizona's regular season will begin on Feb. 6 as they travel to face the University of Arizona.
