/ November 15, 2014
Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 22 Northern Arizona (7-4, 5-2 Big Sky) was stunned on the road when it fell to North Dakota (4-7, 2-5 Big Sky) 30-28 after a last second field goal by the home team. UND hit a 35-yard field goal with four seconds left in the game to halt NAU's comeback attempt at the Alerus Center.
"Our guys showed a lot of heart out there and never gave up," said head coach Jerome Souers. "We were able to stick with it, which led to a one-point lead for us. Give North Dakota credit. They moved the ball well on the last drive and set themselves up to be able to win the ball game in the end, which is exactly what they did."
Jer Garman of North Dakota rushed for 235 yards and two touchdowns to power UND to their second conference win. UND rushed for 297 yards as a team to jolt the Lumberjacks and earn the win.
North Dakota got on the scoreboard first as it capitalized on back-to-back sacks, followed by a muffed punt that put UND on the four-yard line. Garman made his way into the end zone on his first attempt to give UND a 7-0 lead.
At the end of the first quarter, NAU had zero yards of total offense but ended up with 147 by halftime.
UND used three seconds off the clock to start the second quarter at the one-yard line, as Keaton Studsrud added another score for North Dakota.
The Lumberjacks responded four minutes later with a one-yard touchdown run by true freshman Marquice Paige.
That would be the only score for NAU in the first half, as North Dakota scored two more times, including a 78-yard run by German.
NAU used Paige to run over the defense, and after a 20-yard rush by the rookie, Chase Cartwright found Ify Umodu for the 29-yard touchdown pass.
The score brought NAU to within 10 points with five minutes left in the third quarter.
The Lumberjacks continued their scoring stint when Cartwright found Umodu for a 29-yard catch, which led to a one-yard touchdown run by Paige.
For the fourth consecutive time this season, Alex Holmes completed a pass, this time a 58-yarder to Beau Gardner as the tight end sailed down the field into the end zone with no one around him. The score gave NAU the 28-27 edge with 9:40 left to play, but nine minutes and 36 seconds later, UND scored a game winning field goal to steal the victory.
Cartwright finished 22-for-39 with one touchdown pass and 316 yards. Gardner and Umodu both eclipsed the 100-yard mark finishing with 110 and 103 apiece. Holmes also tallied 93 receiving yards.
Blake Bailey finished with a career-high 13 tackles and one sack. The NAU defense picked up three sacks as a team. Darius Lewis registered 10 tackles to round out the top two tacklers.
