NAU Track & Field Shines in National Spotlight

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Northern Arizona University track & field's Lauren Laszczak and Brian Shrader competed on the final day of competition at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Laszczak finished 10th in the women's high jump and Shrader finished eighth in the men's 3000m run.
"I was impressed with Lauren's performance," said director of track & field and cross country Eric Heins. "She was calm and collected and finishing tenth in the country is a great step up from where she was last year at the outdoor meet. Brian was able to bounce back, his goal coming into the 3K was to get into the top-8 and he ran the perfect race to do that."
The women's high jump opened up at a height of 5-08 (1.73m). Laszczak approached the bar confidently and cleared the height with ease on her first attempt. The competition then progressed to a height of 5-10 (1.78m), her best at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. The senior cleared the height on her first attempt as well. That clearance would serve as her best height of the day as she came just short at 5-11.25 (1.81m).
"Lauren had a great season," said graduate assistant coach Jade Ellis. "We're a little disappointed that she didn't get All-American honors but there are just some little things we need to tweak to get better for outdoors."
Laszczak's final indoor season was strong as she garnered a Big Sky championship and finished ranked tied for 10th in the nation in the high jump. The senior's performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships was good for a second-team All-American nod.
"All in all I am proud of myself," said Laszczak. "The competition was awesome, I tried to think of it as a regular meet but that just wasn't possible. I'm proud for making it to my first indoor championships and I can't wait until outdoor."
Shrader competed in the men's 3000m run on the final day of competition and faced the challenge of recovering from competing in the men's 5000m run just one day prior. The junior posted a time of 8:14.84 in the men's 3000m run good for All-American status. Shrader went into the race with a much different plan than that of the 5000m run as he started out very conservatively. In the final 800 meters the junior made his move on the outside in order to go from 14th to eighth place.
"How I raced was just so much better," said Shrader. "I started off slow then worked my way toward the front to put myself in contention. I'm a little disappointed I didn't close it harder but to be able to represent NAU and get All-American honors is great."
