Postgame Notes

ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian (0-2) tried its hardest to make a late second comeback versus No. 25 Northern Arizona (1-1), but the Lumberjacks stopped the Wildcats in their tracks to come away with the 27-21 win at Shotwell Stadium.

"This was a good win for us tonight," said head coach Jerome Souers. "We expect to learn a lot during our non-conference games and tonight wasn't any different. It was good to see Kyren (Poe) have a good game, and we got to play a lot of our young guys. We pulled out the win tonight and the guys should be proud."

NAU produced 249 yards of offense in the first half, 161 coming in the second quarter. The Lumberjacks were able to get on the scoreboard first after a 27-yard field goal kick by Ryan Hawkins.

ACU responded early in the second quarter with a one-yard run by quarterback Parker McKenzie, only after the Lumberjacks had stopped the Wildcats on the first two attempts at the score.

The Lumberjacks ran six minutes off the clock en route to their next score, but before the touchdown would happen, NAU went for it on 4th and 15 and Poe found Hunter Burton for the 15-yard catch. Four plays later, the Poe and Alex Holmes show peaked with a 24-yard touchdown combo with 3:54 to go in the second quarter.

The Wildcats ran one minute and 43 seconds off the clock in three plays, giving NAU control of the ball with 2:07 left in the half. NAU took full advantage of the ball, and made its way up the field play after play, resulting in a three-yard touchdown run from Poe.

To put icing on the cake, true freshman defensive lineman Jarius McDade sacked McKenzie to end the half.

NAU's impressive play in crunch time led to a 3-for-3 performance in the red zone and 1-for-1 in fourth-down conversions.

Coming out of halftime, Eddie Horn did it again, when he picked off ACU's McKenzie for his second interception in as many games. Carrying the momentum to the offensive side of the bal,l Casey Jahn rushed for 31 yards to the ACU 18-yard line. Three plays later, redshirt freshman Corbin Jountti ran the ball in the end zone for his first career touchdown.

The Lumberjacks extended their lead to 24-7 with 13:02 left in the third quarter.

ACU scored its second touchdown of the game late in the third quarter when McKenzie found Cedric Gilbert for the 39-yard touchdown pass.

NAU was able to add to its point total after 35-yard made field goal by Hawkins to increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 27-14 with 9:28 to go in the game.

The Wildcats used a late surge to score a 40-yard touchdown with 8:46 to go in the game, but it would be all that ACU could muster as it dropped its first home game of the season.

ACU had a chance to win the game after blocking a Hawkins field goal attempt with two minutes and 40 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats moved the ball all the way down to NAU's 26-yard line, but the Lumberjacks defense came up big when the team needed them the most and stopped ACU on a fourth and 17 to secure the Lumberjacks first win of the season.

"[On the win] It's a great feeling," said Holmes. "I think that last year getting that win at UC Davis was hard to pull out, but once we did that we kind of went on a roll and I feel that's kind of the way we're going now."

Poe finished 31-for-42 with 293 yards. He threw for one touchdown and rushed for another one. Holmes recorded his second straight 100-yard receiving game, as he finished with a career high 119 yards and one touchdown.

Austin Hasquet recorded his first double-digit tackles game of the season, as he led all players with 13 - a new career high. Horn finished with six tackles and one interception.

The win over the Wildcats gives NAU a 3-0 all-time series record against ACU dating back to Sept. 2, 1989.

The Lumberjacks will play their first home game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Walkup Skydome. Kickoff versus New Mexico Highlands will be at 4 p.m.
