Nine 'Jacks Hit Big Sky Marks at Friday Night Duals

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona Track and Field made a strong showing at their first home meet of the 2015 indoor season, qualifying nine Lumberjacks for February's Big Sky Indoor Championships tonight at the Friday Night Duals.
"It was exciting to watch everyone perform tonight," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "We accomplished a lot and participated in some good competition here at the first meet of the season. I'm very excited about where we are."
Vernon Jamison led the 'Jacks tonight, qualifying in two events. He started the night with a fifth-place finish and time of 6.91 in the 60m dash followed by a second-place finish and time of 8.01 in the 60m hurdles. Jamison won championships in the 60m hurdles, the 110m hurdles and the 4X400m relay.
Shamelle Pless – returning indoor 200m champion – hit a qualifying mark of 24.82 with her fourth-place finish in that event. On the men's side, James Fisher is heading to the Big Sky Championships with his second-place 200m time of 21.74.
Darriel Banks – NAU record holder and reigning Big Sky 60m Champion – finished third in the 60m dash with a Big Sky standard time of 7.59.
Returning Big Sky High Jump Champion Deante Kemper had a strong showing in his first outing of the 2015 season. He won the high jump with a height of 2.17m, a Big Sky standard. Fellow jumper Alexander Odem also posted a Big Sky standard, his in the men's triple jump. Odem won the event with a distance of 14.28m.
In the throws, three 'Jacks posted Big Sky standards. Gus Margiotta and Shawn Collins are heading to the championships in the men's shot put. Margiotta finished fourth with a distance of 16.65m while Collins was fifth with 16.15m. Jessica Weise – runner-up in the shot put last season – finished second in the shot put with a standard distance of 15.22m.
Coming off his third-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Futsum Zienasellassie won the men's 3000m with a time of 8:42.52. Nathan Weitz followed him with a second-place finish and time of 8:43.24. Kylie Goo won the women's mile with a time of 5:20.29.
The Lumberjacks hosted Southern Utah, University of Arizona, Arizona State, Grand Canyon and San Diego State.
Next Saturday, the Lumberjacks are back-in-action, hosting the Lumberjack Team Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. in the Walkup Skydome.
