Strong Day for 'Jack Track at the Lumberjack Team Challenge

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona track and field took advantage of another week in the Walkup Skydome to hit 10 Big Sky qualifying marks at the Lumberjack Team Challenge today.

Vernon Jamison and Deante Kemper led the way for the Lumberjacks today, both qualifying in two events. Kemper continues to dominate in the men's high jump, winning the event with a height of 2.15m. He joined Jamison in the 60m hurdles, finishing third with a qualifying time of 8.10. Jamison – the reigning Big Sky Champion in the 60m hurdles – won that event today with a time of 7.96. He also qualified in the 60m dash with his third-place time of 6.96.

Wrapping up a strong day for the sprints, James Fisher won the 200m dash with a time of 21.84.

Jessica Weise – last week's Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week – finished second in the shot put for the second-straight week with a qualifying distance of 14.66m. She leads the conference in the shot put. Another NAU thrower, Brooke Andersen, punched her ticket to the Big Sky Championships with her fourth-place weight throw distance of 17.72m.

On the men's side, Gus Margiotta and Shawn Collins hit shot put qualifying marks for the second-straight week. Margiotta was fourth with a distance of 16.48m while Collins was fifth with 16.05m.

Returning champion and NAU record holder Darriel Banks hit a qualifying mark today with her second-place finish in the women's 60m dash. She posted a time of 7.55. Shamelle Pless will also look to defend her Big Sky indoor title, taking second in the 200m dash with a qualifying time of 24.86.

Three-time All-American Futsum Zienasellassie was the lone distance qualifier today at the Lumberjack Team Challenge. He picked up a qualifying mark in the men's 800m with second-place time of 1:53.98. In the women's 800m, Kylie Goo, Caroline Hogardh and Emily Bartz swept first, second and third with times of 2:16.74, 2:16.94 and 2:18.93.

Caleb Hoover took on Tyler Byrne in the men's 3000m, topping his teammate with a time of 8:41.54. Both have previously earned All-American honors during their careers. Shayla Freeman won the women's 3000m with a time of 10:49.55.

In the relays, the men's 4X400m of Vernon Jamison, James Fisher, Chris Oestmann and Taylor Schneider took second with a time of 3:18.07. Last year, Jamison and Schneider were on the 4X400m team that won the Big Sky Indoor Championship. In the women's 4X400m relay, sophomore Nicole Fotinos led the 'Jacks to a come-from-behind victory with a 57 second split. Fotinos – along with teammates Shamelle Pless, Bria Edwards and Amanda Stricker – won the event with a time of 3:57.03.

"I didn't expect that at all," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins of Fotino's performance in the 4X400m. "The rest of the splits were between 59 and 60 seconds. She's been training in the hurdles, and she did the long jump last year. It was special because not only did she come out and win the race from behind but she also did it in 57 seconds. That was the highlight of the whole meet for me."

The Lumberjacks are at home again next weekend to host the two-day Mountain T's Invitational. Events start at 9:20 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
