Northern Arizona Track and Field Host Mountain T's Invitational

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona track and field hosts the two-day Mountain-T's Invitational this weekend at the Walkup Skydome. Multi-events lead off the meet on Friday at 9:20 a.m. followed by field events at 2 p.m. and track events at 5 p.m. The second day kicks-off at 8 a.m.

Vernon Jamison and Deante Kemper led the Lumberjacks at the Team Challenge, both qualifying in two events. Kemper won the men's high jump with a qualifying height of 2.15m – a mark that currently ranks 10th in the nation. His third-place time of 8.10 in the men's 60m hurdles was also a Big Sky qualifying mark.

Jamison won the 60m hurdles on Saturday with a time of 7.96. He also picked up a qualifying mark in the men's 60m dash with a time of 6.96. He finished third.

Big Sky Cross Country Champion and All-American Futsum Zienasellassie picked up his first Big Sky qualifying mark on Saturday, winning the men's 800m run with a time of 1:53.98.

Gus Margiotta and Shawn Collins both hit shot put qualifying marks for the second-straight week. Margiotta was fourth with a distance of 16.48m while Collins was fifth with 16.05m.

This weekend also marks the first heptathlon for new heptathlete Royal Black. Last year, Black competed in the long jump at both the indoor and outdoor championships.

On the women's side, Darriel Banks hit a qualifying mark today with her second-place time of 7.55 in the women's 60m dash. She won the Big Sky Championship in the 60m dash last year and holds the NAU record in that event. Shamelle Pless will also look to defend her Big Sky indoor title, taking second in the 200m dash with a qualifying time of 24.86.

Last week's Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week Jessica Weise finished second in the women's shot put with a qualifying distance of 14.66m. She was the Big Sky runner-up for the shot put at both the indoor and outdoor championships. She also currently leads the conference in the shot put.

Brooke Andersen posted a big mark in the women's weight throw on Saturday. She finished fourth with a qualifying distance of 17.72m

Nicole Fotinos made waves at the Lumberjack Team Challenge when she ran a 57 second split on the final leg of the women's 4X400m relay. She led the 'Jacks to a come-from-behind win over teams from UCLA, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, Cal State Bakersfield and Southern Utah.

"It's the first meet of the year where unattached athletes and professional athletes can compete," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins about the Mountain T's Invitational. "We have about 700 entries and 400 athletes competing. We have several Olympians and potential Olympians competing here this weekend. It's exciting to have that caliber of athletes competing in the Skydome."

The 'Jacks host UNLV, University of the Redlands, California State Dominguez Hills, Grand Canyon, University of La Verne and Southern Utah at the meet this weekend.
