Lumberjack Track and Field Finishes the Mountain T's Invitational

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona track and field picked up 10 Big Sky qualifying marks today at the Mountain T's Invitational. Combined with marks from the first day of competition, they come away with 19 standards in two days.

Futsum Zienasellassie, already a qualifier in the men's 800m, picked up a win and qualifying mark of 4:09.96 in the men's mile. Earlier this year, Zienasellassie finished third at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Shawn Collins and Gus Margiotta continue to put up strong marks in the men's shot put, hitting Big Sky standards for the third straight week. Collins finished fourth with a distance of 16.22m while Margiotta was fifth with 16.18m. Micael Ljunberg narrowly missed a qualifying mark with his sixth-place distance of 15.62m.

Vernon Jamison finished third in the men's 60m hurdles, first among collegiate competitors, with a qualifying time of 8.08. He followed up with a qualifying mark of 6.95 in the 60m dash. Also getting a mark in the 60m dash was James Fisher with a time of 6.93. This was Fisher's second Big Sky mark of the Mountain T's – he hit a mark in the men's 200m yesterday evening.

This weekend also marked Royal Black's first collegiate heptathlon. He finished fourth overall with a score of 4451.

On the women's side, Darriel Banks finished third in the 60m dash, second among collegiate competitors with a qualifying time of 7.42. Banks is the returning Big Sky Champion in that event. Shamelle Pless finished third among collegiate competitors and fifth overall with a qualifying mark of 7.50. Both qualified in the 200m last night.

Brooke Andersen hit a big weight throw mark for the second week, finishing second with a distance of 18.05m. Alexis Clay won the women's triple jump with a qualifying distance of 11.54m. Clay is the returning Big Sky long jump champion.

"You get to focus on one event per day if you're doubling," said Director Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "It takes away the stress of recovery. We are taking next week off, so we are hoping to see some big improvements when we come back."

The Lumberjacks are off next week before they are back in the Skydome to host the NAU Invitational on February 13-14. That same weekend, the 'Jacks will also compete at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
