NAU Women's Tennis Concludes Three-Day Tournament at the Wildcat Invitational

Wildcat Invitational Final Results

TUCSON, Ariz. – This weekend (Oct. 2-4), the Northern Arizona University women's tennis team competed at the Wildcat Invitational for their second fall tournament of 2015. Lumberjacks Marta Lewandowska, Hailey Rochin, Emelia Box, Jordan Denesik, Eirene Granville, Sara Brown, Livia Hollosy and Julia Schepp all saw action at the University of Arizona. After three days in Tucson, Ariz., Head Coach Kim Bruno and her squad secured 11 singles wins and eight on the doubles side.

The Lumberjacks faced some tough competition in players from the University of New Mexico, Pac-12 foe University of Arizona, the University of Texas El Paso, New Mexico State University, the University of Texas San Antonio, Utah State University, Tulane University and Big East opponent Marquette University.

In Friday's (Oct. 2) draws, Rochin fell to UTEP's Vivienne Kulicke 6-3, 6-3 but bounced back to defeat Sharon Coone from UNM 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday (Oct. 3). Rochin went on to trump Marquette's Silvia Ambrosio in the semifinals 6-2, 6-1 to qualify for the championship match. Also securing singles wins for NAU on Friday were Denesik, Granville, Brown and Hollosy. This was the first time Denesik has taken the court in the fall season, and she beat NMSU's Elena Arnaudora 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the consolation quarterfinals. Denesik, too, advanced to the consolation championship round after defeating UTEP's Daphne Visscher 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.

In the White Draw round of 16, Granville and Brown both won their first matches of the weekend against UTSA and NMSU respectively. Hollosy also snagged a victory on Friday against Jenna Kane from Utah State with a final score of 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 and another on Saturday edging UTEP's Maria Medina 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the Wildcat Draw.

On the doubles end, day one brought about wins in the qualifying round from Rochin/Lewandowska over Marquette 8-6, and Denesik/Brown over Tulane 8-3. Although doubles pair Rochin and Lewandowska were beat in the Flight #1 quarterfinals, they went on to win their next two matchups against Utah State 8-7 and UTEP 8-7. Adding to NAU's doubles victories in Flight #2 were Denesik and Brown defeating Tulane 8-3 in their first appearance together this season. The duo went on to beat Utah State 8-7, (7-2) in the quarterfinals. Granville/Hollosy also snagged two doubles wins this weekend.

Starting Oct. 14 of next week, Bruno and the Lumberjacks will head back to Las Vegas, Nev. for a five-day stretch at the ITA Regionals. With a couple more weeks of practice under their belt, they hope to build off the highs and lows of the past two weekends and make the most of what lies ahead.
