NAU Notches School Record 27th Win, Moves on to Big Sky Tourney Final
Women's Volleyball / November 20, 2015
Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – For the second straight night, the Northern Arizona volleyball team was scorching offensively. Senior Janae Vander Ploeg and junior Lauren Jacobsen were rolling. The Lumberjack block was stifling. All of that added up to a decisive 25-17, 25-14, 25-15 sweep of Sacramento State to advance to Saturday's Big Sky Championship match versus Idaho State at 7 p.m. in the Rolle Activity Center.
Tickets for Saturday's final can be purchased online HERE or by calling 928-523-5661, and all NAU students receive free admission with their student ID.
"This was one of our most complete matches of the year and Sacramento State got our best tonight," said head coach Ken Murphy. "We feel like we're getting better and peaking at the right time of the year."
Behind a complete team effort, NAU extended its win streak to 16 matches and set yet another school record with its 27th win of the season. The 'Jacks are now 27-4, breaking the previous mark of 26 victories set in 1991.
Vander Ploeg and Jacobsen tormented the Hornet defense, as the duo hit a combined .441 with 27 kills against just one error. Vander Ploeg finished with a match-high 15 kills without an error to finish at a .517 clip. Jacobsen meanwhile tallied 12 kills and hit .367.
NAU has now recorded the two highest single-match hitting percentages in Big Sky Championship history in consecutive matches. One night after hitting a tournament record .448 versus Southern Utah, the Lumberjacks nearly outdid themselves hitting .443 versus Sacramento State.
NAU shined the brightest in a matchup between the top two hitting teams in the conference, while casting a shadow caused by an overwhelming block on Sacramento State. The Lumberjacks committed just two attack errors as a team with junior Jensen Barton running the show masterfully. On the other side, the Hornets were held to a season-low .089 percentage.
"(Janae and Lauren) have been patient and just taking what the defense has been giving them," Murphy said. "They're evolving their games to where they can take advantage of what we're seeing. Jensen is delivering the ball accurately with great tempo and we're giving her nice passes and digs to do that."
Vander Ploeg did not waste any time in delivering four kills on the way to an 8-3 Lumberjack lead to open the semifinal showdown. The Lumberjacks snapped a 1-1 tie, hit .472 and ran away with the opening set. While Vander Ploeg and Jacobsen were delivering seven kills apiece in the first set, junior Addy Lofstedt rejected consecutive points for two of NAU's five solo blocks for the night.
NAU was far from done doing damage in all facets of the match in the second set, and Jacobsen sparked a service surge with a pair of aces. Barton and senior Jordan Leiter also tacked on an ace, as the 'Jacks found the floor four times with serves in the second set. NAU seized control with a 10-2 run that opened up a 17-8 it never relinquished.
The Hornets failed to go down easily using a four-point run to take a 13-12 lead. Two aces and two kills by Sacramento State forced an NAU timeout, but ignited the match-clinching run. Following a Hornet service error to give the Lumberjacks serve at 13-13, Jacobsen tallied her career-high tying fifth ace to start a 6-0 run. In all, the 'Jacks claimed 13 of the final 15 points, aided by seven Hornet attack errors. Sacramento State hit under zero, -.067, in the final set, while NAU hit an errorless .500.
"We knew what we had to do because Sac State is a great team," Barton said. "We knew we had to play even better than yesterday. We're just doing what we do every day and it's working out."
Jacobsen and Vander Ploeg each picked up double-doubles finishing with 15 and 12 digs respectively. Redshirt senior Stacia Williams added eight as NAU outdug Sacramento State, 48-43.
At the net, NAU totaled 9.0 team blocks to Sacramento State's 2.0. Redshirt freshman Brittni Dorsey posted a team-high four blocks, while Lofstedt, senior Payton Bock and Barton all recorded multiple blocks to swat the potent Hornet attack down.
NAU will face No. 3 Idaho State in Saturday's tournament finale, which will mark their third Big Sky tournament championship appearance in school history. The Lumberjacks' 17th win in a row would lock up their second ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The final match of the 2015 Big Sky Volleyball Championship starts at 7 p.m. Saturday night in the Rolle Activity Center.
