NAU Rides Mulder's Hot Shooting Past New Mexico Highlands, 91-43
/ December 01, 2015
Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – By the end of a morning tip-off on Field Trip Day, the Northern Arizona women's basketball team had served a plate full of points to the 1,104 fans in attendance in a 91-43 rout of New Mexico Highlands. Every Lumberjack in uniform scored as NAU posted a successful Walkup Skydome debut Tuesday morning to improve to 2-4 this season.
"Every player on the team scored at least four points and grabbed at least one rebound, so I was proud of that," said head coach Sue Darling. "The strength of our team is our entire team and we need 11 players who are confident. We need all 11 players to play well this year and at any one time, we have five basketball players on the court who can all get the job done."
Senior Monique Mulder led NAU's high-octane offense with a career-high 21 points on a career-best 9-for-14 shooting. She hit 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and also posted a well-rounded stat line with five rebounds, six assists and a career-high tying five steals.
Mulder was far from the lone player to light it offensively, as junior Taylor Leyva, redshirt junior Shay Young and freshman Passionate Amukamara all hit double-figures with 10 points each. Young tied her career-high, while the 10-point outing was the first career double-digit scoring games for Leyva and Amukamara.
Juniors Brittani Lusain and Bradlee Cotton got the Lumberjacks revved up from the opening tip, combining for the game's first nine points in the first five minutes. Freshman Alyssa Rader then scored the next six points, and by the time junior Mariah Willadsen hit two free throws to end the quarter, the 'Jacks held a convincing 21-3 lead over the Cowgirls.
The second quarter belonged to Mulder, who scored 10 consecutive points in less than a two-minute span to extend NAU's advantage to 31-3. By intermission, NAU had shot 58.5 percent from the floor, 75 percent from three-point range and 88.9 percent from the line in a 45-13 first half.
"Defensively, I wanted to come off the bench and get steals because I knew I had my teammates behind me," Mulder said. "I wanted to provide a spark for my team. We wanted to play inspired Lumberjack basketball and hopefully we inspired some kids (in the crowd). After two losses, this game really boosts our confidence and we want to keep it going."
It was more Mulder in the third quarter as she hit all three of triples in a two-minute span, while freshman Kaleigh Paplow scored six of her season-best eight points in the period. The Lumberjacks' biggest lead was 49 in the final quarter, with Leyva enjoying a perfect fourth period going 3-for-3 from the field – including two threes – and 2-for-2 from the line in scoring all 10 of her points. Amukamara had seven of her 10 in the fourth as well.
The Third Annual Field Trip game with over 900 kids in the crowd was a wide success, as NAU improved to 2-1 on Field Trip Day.
"We needed to bounce back from a rough weekend and I believe we did that," Darling said. "We played all 40 minutes and we needed to get back to what we do both offensively and defensively. It was especially fun because all of the screaming kids energized all of us."
The 'Jacks utilized their unselfish brand of basketball – assisting on 24 of 34 made baskets – to set new season-highs in field goal percentage (54 percent) and three-point percentage (58.8 percent). NAU hit 10-of-17 three-pointers with Mulder, Amukamara, Leyva and junior Rene Coggins all hitting at least two. The Lumberjacks also shot 86.7 percent at the free throw line.
Defensively, NAU attacked the passing lines and stifled New Mexico Highlands into 19 turnovers, recording 17 steals. The total was NAU's most in a game since posting 21 steals versus Sacramento State on Jan. 28, 2012 covering a 101-game span. Coggins set a new career-best with five thefts and Mulder matched Coggins with her own career-high tying five. NAU was able to turn 19 turnovers into 33 points.
The Lumberjacks crushed the Cowgirls on the glass, nearly doubling the visitors up, 50-26. Freshman Alyssa Rader led the way with 10 boards, notching her fifth double-figure rebounding game of the season.
The Lumberjacks look to carry their momentum into their next game on Friday at UC Irvine at 8 p.m. Arizona time. The game can be seen online here.
