Swimming & Diving Earns Two Victories at FAU Fun Invite

BOCA RATON, Fla. – In their final meet of the calendar year, the Northern Arizona swimming & diving team came away with a 2-1 dual record on Saturday at the FAU Fun Invite. The Lumberjacks picked up convincing wins over the host Florida Atlantic, 175-81, and Marywood, 205-50, while dropping a 189-71 decision to Northwestern. NAU is now 5-6 in dual meets this season.
"We had some pretty good results overall today," said head coach Andy Johns. "We tried to make our lineup so that everyone swam at least one of their main events. It was a great way to end the semester and to start our training camp in Florida. The travel wasn't easy, but it was a great way to end the semester and to start our training camp in Florida."
The Lumberjacks' top performance was in the 100 backstroke where sophomore Claire Hammond led a two-three-four overall finish for NAU. Hammond posted a time of 1:00.51, and was followed by juniors Sara Lenhoff (1:01.05) and Jori Lindquist (1:01.73).
NAU also enjoyed a host of other second-place overall finishes starting with sophomore Kimmy Richter in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.55. Sophomore Alina Staffeldt clocked a time of 57.50 in the 100 butterfly and junior Hayley Edmond posted a time of 53.87 in the 100 free. Junior Urte Kazakeviciute and senior Kendall Brown also placed second in the 100 breaststroke and 500 free with times of 1:05.93 and 5:03.99 respectively.
In addition to the 100 back, NAU also completed a two-four-five finish in the 200 free and the 100 fly. Behind Richter in the 200 free, sophomore Roni Houck posted a time of 1:55.92 to finish fourth and Edmond finished fifth with a time of 1:58.68. In the 100 fly, freshman Andrea Schmidt posted the fourth-best time of 59.77 and freshman Amanda Sumrow followed with a time of 1:00.45.
The 'Jacks also placed second overall in the 200 free relay with the team of Houck, Richter, Schmidt and Staffeldt combining for a time of 1:38.94.
NAU will take the rest of 2015 off before returning to the pool for its annual double dual in Tucson, Ariz. versus Arizona and Oregon State on Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
