Heartbreaking 98-94 Double OT Loss for Men's Hoops to Hampton

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – It took 250 minutes of play for Northern Arizona (2-5) and Hampton (3-3) to find a winner tonight at the Walkup Skydome, as the visiting Pirates took advantage of the extra time to come away with the 98-94 victory tonight.

"We played 50 minutes tonight," said head coach Jack Murphy. "I thought the guys came out and executed the game plan, but we let our foot off the gas. This is the kind of game you need to win on your home court. You have to give Hampton credit for taking advantage of some opportunities. Next up is Cal State Bakersfield Saturday on the road. We have to go out and compete for 40 minutes."

The Lumberjacks never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as 22 points with 1:20 to go in the half. Backed by Kris Yanku's 11 points, NAU took a 42-26 advantage into the locker room.

NAU continued to pile on the pressure to start the second period, but a jumper by Hampton's Dionte Adams trimmed the Lumberjacks' lead to nine points with 8:16 to go in the period. Adams may have brought the Pirates to within single digits, but it was the play of Reginald Johnson Jr. that really led the Pirates to victory. Johnson netted a career-high 35 points, and scored 18 of them in the second period to help send the game into overtime.

The game found itself in overtime after Hampton scored 54 points to NAU's 38 in the second period. Twenty-two of those points came in the paint, as Hampton took advantage of NAU's foul trouble.

NAU led by five with 1:04 to go in the first overtime frame, but Johnson hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to send the game into the second OT.

After both teams scored 12 points each in the first overtime, the second time overtime period was a different story. Hampton made a pair of free throws with 3:49 to go, but after that the next set of points did not come until 19 seconds left. Hampton's six points in the second overtime period all came from the free throw line. NAU's lone basket of the period was a layup by Yanku with two seconds to go.

Both teams shot over 40 percent from the game, while NAU made an impressive 19 of 21 free throws.

Yanku was NAU's top scorer of the night tallying 25 points and a perfect 16-for-16 performance from the charity stripe, tying his own NAU single game free throw percentage record. Three Lumberjacks scored 16 points – Ako Kaluna, Brady Twombly, and Torry Johnson.

"I'm starting to find my role on the team and what I can do to help," said Twombly. "Early in the game they played me a little loose, but later on they guarded me much tighter. (Coach) Murphy said at the half that he have to play for 40 minutes."

NAU plays at Cal State Bakersfield this Saturday, before taking a week and a half off from competition.
