Men's Tennis: Back On the Road to Tucson & New Mexico

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team is back on the road for their second straight weekend to start out the season. On Friday, Feb. 13, the Lumberjacks will face Nevada in a neutral match in Tucson, then head to New Mexico for a Saturday matchup against New Mexico State in Las Cruces.

The Lumberjacks are coming off a tough weekend to open the season in Tucson against Arizona and No. 73 Utah State. The Lumberjacks' lone win last weekend came from senior Kester Black on court three. After dropping the first set 6-1, Black won the last two sets against Utah State's Marcus Fritz 6-4, 10-8 for his first win of the season.

Series

The Lumberjacks will square off against Nevada for the 22nd time in school history with an 8-13 record against the Wolf Pack. NAU will face off against New Mexico State for the 29th time in school history. This will be the fourth straight season that Northern Arizona will go up against New Mexico State with NAU beating the Aggies last year 4-2.

Scouting Nevada

Although the Wolf Pack has started the season 0-2, Nevada has some impressive records in singles play. Moez Charqui leads Nevada this season with eight wins and right behind Charqui is Robert Marqitfalvi with seven wins. Two members of the Wolf Pack came into the season with an ITA ranking Charqui is ranked No. 7 in the Mountain Region and Andrew Poustie is ranked No. 13. Nevada's most successful doubles duo is Poustie paired with Fernando Sunago combining for nine wins in doubles this season. Just like Northern Arizona, Nevada has not had a home match this season.

 

Scouting New Mexico State

The Aggies are riding a two-match winning streak with one of their opponents coming from the Big Sky, Weber State, dominating the Wildcats 4-1. New Mexico State also has not had a home match this season until they face the Lumberjacks in Las Cruces. A trio of Aggie players highlight the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Coming in at No. 19 in singles is Liam Goldberg  who is riding a two-match winning streak in singles. Patrick Pfister and Strahinja Trecakov come into the spring ranked as the eighth best duo in the Mountain Region in doubles play.
