Monumental Win: NAU Defeats No. 70 Nevada 5-2

TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second time in school history, the Northern Arizona men's tennis team defeated a nationally ranked opponent as the Lumberjacks took down No. 70 Nevada, 5-2 for NAU's first win this season.

This is a signature win for Kroll in just his second year at Northern Arizona defeating a nationally ranked opponent for the first time since 2002. Right off the bat the Lumberjacks came ready to play, taking the doubles point 2-1 with wins on courts one & three. After dropping the match on court two, NAU would have to win the final two matches in order to take the doubles point.

Tying Nevada at 1-1 was Felix Schumann and Eden Peleg with a dominating 6-0 win over Peter O'Donovan & Mile Cilic on court three. It was up to Adi Zilberstein and Kester Black to bring home the point and the duo came up clutch with a 6-3 victory over No. 7 in the ITA Mountain Region, Moez Cargui and Robert Allan as NAU took the early 1-0 lead.

Zilberstein extended NAU's lead to two with a win on court six over Cilic 6-3, 6-1 for his first singles win in his collegiate career. Nevada would take the next two points on courts three and two to tie the match at 2-2. A pair of freshmen stepped up for NAU reclaiming and eventually taking over for the win. Schumann retook the lead for the Lumberjacks on court five with a three-set win on court five. Schumann dropped a tough 7-6 (4) first set to O'Donovan but the freshman from Germany responded with a 7-5 win in set two, fighting off elimination and forcing a third set. Looking to reclaim the lead, Schumann left no doubt with a resounding 6-1 win giving NAU the 3-2 lead.

Looking to close out the match, the Lumberjacks' No. 1 player, Peleg, would step up to give NAU its first win of the season. Peleg had the task of facing No. 13 in the Mountain Region, Andrew Poustie, in a tough three-set match. Peleg set the tone with a gritty 7-6 (4) win to take the first set. After dropping the second set, Peleg stormed back to take the third set 6-1, clinching the match for Northern Arizona.

"I'm very happy to clinch for the 'Jacks today," said Peleg. "It is a really big win for the team and we are all improving each match."

Alexandre Locci added the icing on the cake with a three-set win on court four over Allan. Locci dropped the first set 6-2 but rallied in the last two sets 6-4, 7-5 giving NAU the 5-2 win over the Wolf Pack.

The Lumberjacks now head back on the road to Las Cruces, N.M. for a matchup tomorrow against New Mexico State.
