OGDEN, Utah – In just his second week into his first collegiate season, Northern Arizona men's tennis freshman Felix Schumann has been named Big Sky Player of the Week. The award comes after a monumental weekend for NAU defeating nationally ranked Nevada and coming from behind to defeat New Mexico State. In the two wins over the Wolf Pack and the Aggies, Schumann went unbeaten going 3-0 to help lead the Lumberjacks to their first two wins of the season.
In doubles play against Nevada, Schumann tied the doubles point at 1-1 with a win along with Eden Peleg in a dominating 6-0 victory over Peter O'Donovan & Mile Cilic on court three. Then in singles, Schumann retook the lead for the Lumberjacks on court five with a three-set win. Schumann dropped a tough 7-6 (4) first set to O'Donovan but the freshman from Germany responded with a 7-5 win in set two, fighting off elimination and forcing a third set. Looking to reclaim the lead, Schumann left no doubt with a resounding 6-1 win giving NAU the 3-2 lead.
On Saturday, when the Lumberjacks were down 3-2 to New Mexico State, Schumann once again came up clutch tying the match for NAU in a three-set match, this time over New Mexico State's Paul Denele. Schumann took the first set 7-5 but Denele came back in the second set 6-4 to force a third set. Schumann came up big in the third set with a 6-3 victory, giving NAU its third win of the day.
Schumann and the rest of the Lumberjacks will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday as they travel to New Mexico for two matches against the University of New Mexico and Air Force.
