FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Deante Kemper and Futsum Zienasellassie led Northern Arizona track and field on the second day of the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships, both picking up Big Sky Individual Championships.
Kemper earned his fifth title – and third straight – in the men's high jump with a height of 7-00.50.
"It feels good to win another Big Sky Championship; it is my senior year and my last chance at the indoor meet," said Kemper following his event. "It's emotional to close at home, but I am glad I got to go out with the win."
Kemper currently ranks fifth in the nation with his school-record breaking height of 7-04.25 from the Iowa State Classic. He'll represent the 'Jacks at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Kemper also qualified for tomorrow's 60m hurdles final with the third-seed time of 8.05.
Three-time cross country All-American Futsum Zienasellassie picked up his first Big Sky indoor track title tonight with his win in the men's 5000m. He posted a time of 14:52.08.
"The goal for this Championship meet is to focus on one race at a time," said Zienasellassie. "I finished this one strong and now it is onto my other two events tomorrow."
He'll compete for the 'Jacks in the 3000m and mile tomorrow.
Kayla Freeman earned her first All-Big Sky track nod today with her third-place finish in the women's 3000m. She posted a time of 18:03.65 followed by Melanie Townsend in fourth with a time of 18:08.61.
In the women's distance medley, Shayla Freeman, Nicole Fotinos, Kylie Goo and Caroline Hogardh picked up an all-conference nod with their second-place time of 12:06.93. The men's team of Jarrick Wenslow, Cameron Coleman, Caleb Potts and Bahlbi Gebreyohanns were fourth with 10:25.28.
Gus Margiotta earned his second all-conference honor of his career tonight and first since the 2012 season with his second-place finish in the men's shot put. He put up a distance of 17.10m. Teammate Shawn Collins also earned a place on the podium with his third-place throw of 16.34m.
Vernon Jamison is heading to the finals in the 60m hurdles and the 60m dash tomorrow. Jamison is the defending champion in the hurdles and goes into the finals with the top-seed time of 7.85. In the 60m dash, he put up a personal record mark of 6.82 which was also the top-seeded time in that event.
In his first showing this season, Adel al Nasser picked up the second-fastest qualifying time in the men's 400m dash and will appear in tomorrow's finals. Nicole Fotinos will represent the women's team in the 400m with her preliminary time of 55.67, a personal best.
James Fisher led the conference in the preliminary round of the 200m. He goes into tomorrow's final with a seed time of 21.45.
Darriel Banks and Shamelle Pless are both heading to the finals in the 60m dash and 200m dash. Pless posted the second-fastest seed time of 7.44 in the 60m and the fifth-fastest of 24.23 in the 200m. She'll be looking to defend her 2014 indoor 200m title tomorrow.
Banks posted the third-fasted 60m time of 7.45. She is the returning champion in that event. She goes into the 200m with the seventh-seeded time of 24.43.
In the 800m, Melanie Zibrat and Emily Bartz will both compete in the finals with preliminary times of 2:14.91 and 2:16.63 while Caleb Potts will compete for the men with 1:54.26.
As a team, the men are currently in second-place with 47 points after six events, closely following Sacramento State's 54 points. The women are fourth with 26 points after six events. Montana State leads with 47 points.
"Overall, it was a good day," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "In track, it's hard to hit on all cylinders, in every event, on both days. For the most part, the men are where we need them to be. We did it a little bit differently this year. We put up 47 points and we have a lot of people going to the finals tomorrow. Our women may be a little short right now, but we're going to come out guns-a-blazing tomorrow to give it our best shot."
The final day of the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships kicks-off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in the Walkup Skydome. Live results are available at www.wingfootfinish.com/live and live video is available on our championship central page.
