GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team had to travel all the way to Grand Forks for its first Big Sky match of the season against North Dakota and the Lumberjacks were able to sweep North Dakota 7-0 for NAU's first win of the season.
"Getting that first win of the season is always tough," said head coach Kim Bruno. "For the girls to not only win but sweep 7-0 shows me what this team is made of."
NAU went a perfect 6-0 against North Dakota in singles play starting off with the big matchup on court one between last season' Big Sky All-Conference selections Johanna Vang and Callie Ronkowski. A First-Team selection, Vang was able to take down Ronkowski, an Honorable Mention selection, 6-2, 6-3 giving NAU a 1-0 lead.
Hailey Rochin was able to pick up her first win of the season on court two over Lacey Sprinkle. Rochin dominated the first set 6-1 and closed out the match in the second set 7-5 for her first win in singles play. Livia Hollosy earned not only her first win of the season but her first win in her collegiate career. Hollosy played on court five for the Lumberjacks going up against Sophie Allen-Fisher in a tight two-set match. Hollosy defeated Allen-Fisher 6-4 in the first set and was able to finish the match in set two outlast Allen-Fisher 7-6 (4) for the victory.
NAU was able to take their first doubles point of the season with wins on court two and three. Hollosy and Jordan Denesik won their first doubles match of the season as the duo defeated Kathleen Preston and Sophie Allen-Fisher 6-2. Rochin and Marta Lewandowska were able to clinch the match for Northern Arizona on court two in a 6-1 victory over Faith Lee and Mimi Yunker.
"I think we really came together as a team today," said Vang. "We played smart and consistent tennis and if this keeps up I think we can do very well this season."
Northern Arizona will close out its road trip in Grand Forks on Sunday, Feb. 8, in a neutral site matchup with South Dakota State.
"We need to enjoy this win tonight but tomorrow it is back to working the process," said Bruno.
