Jackson & Geiger Post Strong Showings to Close Season

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Northern Arizona swimming & diving season came to an end on Tuesday with junior Chelsea Jackson and sophomore Alexa Geiger wrapping up the NCAA Zone E Diving Championship at the Air Force Academy. In Tuesday's 1-meter springboard competition, Jackson placed 15th overall while Geiger narrowly missed the finals and placed 27th in the preliminaries.
After an 18th place 3-meter finish on Monday, Jackson came back and put herself in a good position to possibly qualify for the NCAA Championship in the preliminaries. Just six points out of the top eight qualifying spots, Jackson finished the prelims in 11th place with a score of 275.15. Jackson hung tough in a stacked finals field featuring 11 Pac-12 divers among the 18 finalists and would finish the finals with a two-round score of 539.55.
"Chelsea was in it for the first couple rounds of finals, but then she had one dive that didn't work so well," said diving coach Nikki Huffman. "She fought her way back and did a great job overall. She was definitely in the hunt and there were some big time divers and she held her own."
Geiger finished in the upper half of the field in the prelims and was one of a number of divers within striking distance of advancing to the finals. She finished the opening session with a score of 251.35, a mere nine points out of a spot in the finals, concluding her season on a high note.
"If Lex would've done her last dive a little faster, I really think she would've made it into the finals because that last dive can be a big dive for her," Huffman said. "Both of them dove very consistent and were mentally tough. They showed they belong with some amazing divers."
With the NCAA Zone meet coming to an end for the two NAU divers, it puts a cap on the 2014-15 swimming & diving season which culminated in a second consecutive Western Athletic Conference championship. Specifically for Jackson and Geiger, two of the biggest forces on the team at the WAC Championships, the regional diving meet served as a capper for a solid season.
"They both improved a lot this year," Huffman said. "There were ups and downs and there were times when both of them were out of the pool because of injuries. At the end of the year they really pulled it together well, better than any other team in the conference. That showed this week with how well they placed within the conference and with the Mountain West as well."
