NAU Defeats Weber State 4-3 to Remain Undefeated in Conference
/ March 27, 2015
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – In order to maintain their perfect record within conference, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team faced off against Weber State in their third home match this week. The Lumberjacks took the doubles point, which proved to be vital as NAU defeated the Wildcats 4-3, maintaining a perfect 5-0 record in conference. Northern Arizona now moves to 8-6 this season.
"Todays was a gritty performance from our entire team in order to pull this win out," said head coach Kim Bruno. "It was a battle today and I am proud of the way our ladies stepped up today but on Sunday against Idaho we are going to have to raise our level of play even more."
For the fifth straight match, the Lumberjacks came away with the doubles point starting with a victory on court one from Johanna Vang and Marta Lewandowska for their fourth straight win as a duo. Vang and Lewandowska defeated Agata Bachanek and Kristi Elmer 6-2 as NAU won its first match of the day. Hailey Rochin and Emelia Box sealed the win for the Lumberjacks with a 6-2 on court two over Romy Stephens-Dodd and Dominique Beauvais to clinch doubles for Northern Arizona.
Sara Brown continues to stay hot with her fourth straight victory on court six in singles. Brown defeated in straight 6-0 sets to kick start the Lumberjacks in singles. The Wildcats took the win on court one to come within one match of the Lumberjacks but Rochin extended NAU's lead back to two with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win on court two over Kristi Elmer. One minute after Rochin's win, Box not only clinched the doubles point but she also sealed the win for Northern Arizona on court with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on court three over Dominique Beauvais, giving NAU its fourth straight win.
"Everyone started off a bit slow in singles but we were able to fight and get through it," said Box. "This was definitely the best team we have played this week so it was good that we were able to pull this one out."
The biggest match of the week is now on Sunday, as the Lumberjacks welcome new member of the Big Sky Conference this year, Idaho, who is 9-7 this season and 6-1 in conference play.
"We need these matches because this was a gut-check for our team," said Bruno. "We need four points on Sunday and it does not matter where they come from but we need everyone to step up their game."
On Sunday, March 29, play will begin at 10 a.m. at Continental Country Club against the Vandals.
