/ March 07, 2015
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Junior Chelsea Jackson and sophomore Alexa Geiger will vie for a spot in the NCAA Championships next Monday and Tuesday as the pair will represent the Northern Arizona swimming & diving team at the NCAA Zone E Diving meet. The Lumberjack duo will compete in a field of nearly 60 divers from around the region for a chance to extend their seasons even further at the national meet.
"Zones is like no other meet throughout the year," said diving coach Nikki Huffman. "It's a meet that is a qualifier for nationals. I just want to see them dive consistently, believe in their training that they've been doing and hopefully it all comes together. I do believe that both Chelsea and Lex have what it takes to be at least be in the finals and if someone has a great meet, they have a shot at nationals."
Jackson and Geiger will compete on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards at the Zone Championships hosted by the Air Force Academy after posting qualifying scores during the season. The pair will not compete on the platform tower.
Both NAU divers will head into the Zone E meet with a lot of momentum following exceptional performances at the WAC Championships last week.
Jackson's conference championship was highlighted by her gold medal finish on 3-meter posting a season-best score of 308.95 in the finals. Jackson had the best prelim score of 272.90, but elevated her performance to new heights in the final to snag her first ever WAC first-place finish. Jackson also garnered a 1-meter silver medal with a score of 273.55, a slight drop from her season-best score of 290.10 in the prelims. She also notched a season-best performance on platform with a fourth-place finish and a score of 204.85.
Meanwhile, Geiger turned in a sensational effort herself in San Antonio, Texas collecting her first two career medals at the WAC Championships. On the first day, Geiger dove her way into third-place on her final dive in the finals to finish with a score of 268.65 on 1-meter. The following night, Geiger picked up her second bronze medal of the week on 3-meter, posting a finals score of 274.60. She placed seventh on platform to conclude the meet with a season-best score of 185.05.
Together, the pair earned six all-conference honors in six events with four medals between them.
Last year, Jackson advanced to the 3-meter finals and finished 15th last year with a two-round score of 577.50. Geiger placed a team-best 22nd on 1-meter, finishing four spots out of qualifying for the finals.
Jackson and Geiger will compete on 3-meter on Monday and 1-meter on Tuesday at Air Force's Cadet Natatorium. Preliminaries start on both days at 10 a.m. with finals starting at approximately 2 p.m.
