LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team continued its three-match weekend with a matchup against UNLV. The Lumberjacks needed four wins in singles and NAU delivered defeating the Rebels, 4-3, for the first time since 1975.

"Great win for our program today," said head coach Kim Bruno. "The team competed hard and showed great improvement since our last match."

UNLV started the match taking the doubles point on courts two and three both by a score of 6-2 but the Lumberjacks fired back with wins on courts one, two, three and six to defeat the Rebels.

"I am proud of how the girls did not get deflated after the doubles point," said Bruno. "They came out knowing they could win if they stuck with their game plans."

NAU's leader, Johanna Vang, started things off at the No. 1 position with a win over Santa Shumilina 6-2, 6-3. Hailey Rochin followed Vang's lead with a win on court two over Anett-Ferenczi-Bako 7-5, 7-6 giving NAU its second win in singles.

Emelia Box was in a tough three-set match against Iren Kotseva on court three and the England native started the match with a gritty 7-6 win in the first set. Box dropped the second set 6-0 but the junior stormed back for a 7-5 win to take the match. NAU's final win came on court six from Jordan Denesik, in another three-set match against Alexis Garrett. Denesik took the first set 7-6 but Garrett forced a third set with a 6-4 win in set two. For NAU's fourth win, Denesik defeated Garrett 6-1 for the Lumberjacks fourth win.

"We will enjoy this but we still need to continue to improve," said Bruno. "We need to continue to make adjustments in route to our Big Sky matches.

The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow, Mar. 8, to close out the weekend against UC Riverside in a neutral site matchup at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
