Lumberjacks Pick Up Big Marks at Final Regular Season Meet

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Futsum Zienasellassie picked up a big personal best for Northern Arizona track and field in the men's 5000m today with his time of 13:49.34 at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford. Zienasellassie's time looks to rank in the top 20 of the nation. The last time he was in Palo Alto, Zienasellassie posted the nation's fourth-fastest 10,000m time. 

Tyler Byrne, Matt McElroy and Weston Strum all picked up Big Sky qualifying marks in the 5000m at Stanford while Cody Reed ran a standard time of 9:02.47 in the 3000m steeplechase. 

In Irvine, Calif., the Lumberjacks competed at the second day of the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine. Vernon Jamison led the charge, hitting Big Sky qualifying marks in three events. He finished third in the 200m with a time of 21.31, seventh in the 100m with 10.75 and third in the 110m hurdles with 14.19. 

Adel al Nasser finished third - first among collegiate competitors - in the 400m with a standard time of 48.13. Chris Oestmann qualified for the 400m hurdles with his time of 53.54. 

Shawn Collins, Gus Margiotta and Micael Ljunberg all picked up marks in the throws. Collins posted a distance of 16.69m and Margiotta posted 16.13m in the shot put while Ljunberg posted 54.73m in the discus. 

Carolyn Bethel is heading to Cheney, Wash. to represent the 'Jacks in the 800m at the conference championships. She finished eighth in that event with a time of 2:11.71.

Shamelle Pless finished third among collegiate competitors in the 100m dash with a Big Sky standard time of 11.73. She also picked up a qualifying mark in the 200m with her seventh-place time of 24.15. 

Kayla Freeman finished third in the 1500m with a qualifying mark of 4:27.27 while Caroline Hogardh is also heading to the championships with her time of 4:29.74.
