NAU Volleyball Quick Sets with Hannah Cherry
NAU Volleyball Quick Sets with Hannah Cherry

Throughout the month of June, nauathletics.com will introduce each of the four incoming NAU Volleyball freshmen to Lumberjack Country. Next: Hannah Cherry.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Moving from Missouri to Arizona can be a difficult transition. However if Hannah Cherry's high school track record follows her to Flagstaff, she should have no problem adjusting to life while producing on the court for the Northern Arizona volleyball team starting this upcoming fall.

Cherry will join the Lumberjacks after a record setting senior season at Villa Duchesne High School. During her final season, the 5-10 outside hitter set a new school record with 465 kills and averaged nearly five kills per set with a 4.97 kill average. Cherry helped her team to a state runner-up finish while also hitting .464 and totaling 353 digs and 38 service aces. Cherry, whose team was also Sectional and District champions during her senior year, received First Team All-State, All-Conference, All-Region and All-District honors in 2013 and 2014.

Now, get to know the incoming freshman from St. Charles, Mo. in the second of four weekly installments of Quick Sets.

Q: What are you looking forward to the most about playing volleyball at Northern Arizona University?

A: "I'm really excited to play at the highest level of college. It's something I've looked forward to my entire club career and that's been my goal. As I was visiting, I got the impression that the program was on the upward swing with everything Coach (Ken) Murphy has done and the people he's brought in. I really like everything that he is about and I'm really excited to be a part of this program."

Q: What part of your game on the court should fans be excited about?

A: "I don't know how this will translate to college considering it's a completely different game, but I've found in club that in the toughest games, I have an ability to find a way to score. I try as hard as I can to help the team when we're struggling whether it's getting a kill or making a great dig. I'm also incredibly competitive and that shows when I play."

Q: If you could play any other position on the court, what would it be?

A: "I'd like to be a setter because so often when we goof around at practice, people tell me 'you're not a setter.' But most because it's really fun and no matter what, you will touch the ball every play. Setters are the quarterbacks of a volleyball team. I think that's so cool."

Q: If you weren't playing volleyball, what sport would you be playing?

A: "Growing up, my parents told my siblings and I that we had to play every sport. I played basketball for a really long time and I had a choice to either keep with basketball or volleyball and I chose volleyball. I probably could've gone with basketball, and I still like it, but I like volleyball better."

Q: What is one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: "I used to ride horse."
