Lumberjacks Begin 2015-16 Campaign with Hobble Creek Fall Classic
/ September 11, 2015
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Coming off its second Big Sky Conference Championship in the last three seasons, the Northern Arizona University golf team is preparing for its 2015 fall season, which starts Sept. 14 with the Hobble Creek Fall Classic in Springville, Utah, hosted by Utah Valley University.
Golfers will tee-off the two day, 54-hole tournament Monday morning, with the first 36 holes to follow. The remaining 18 holes will be played Tuesday, with both days set to start at 8:30 a.m. MST.
"We are glad to be going back to Hobble Creek," said head coach Brad Bedortha. "We struggled there last year and the team is ready to make amends and play well."
The Lumberjacks are looking to build off a 2014-15 campaign that saw them log four top-three finishes in seven tournaments and claim two first-place victories, including a conference title last spring.
If NAU is to have another successful calendar season, the Lumberjacks will rely on senior Jacquie LeMarr. The transfer from UCLA had an impressive junior campaign, notching two top-10 finishes and a three-round score of 225 at conference championships, good enough for eighth-place and All Big-Sky honors.
Six golfers in total return for the 'Jacks in 2015-16, including junior Kim Cifuentes, who shot a two-round total of 150 during last year's Hobble Creek Fall Classic and finished tied for 12th. The 2013 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Savana Bezdicek enters her final year as a Lumberjack, with Carly Akine, Kaitlyn Saum and sister Sierra Bezdicek joining her for their sophomore seasons. The only newcomer to the squad is freshman Sofya Anokhina, a native of Moscow, Russia.
"I'm very excited for the fall season to begin," said Bedortha. "The girls have been doing well in regards to raising our standards, having a great attitude, giving their very best effort, treating people really well and having unconditional gratitude."
Other teams in the field include host UVU, New Mexico State, Hawaii, Eastern Washington and Montana. Interested audiences can find the entire 16-team field and follow along on GolfStat's live scoring page.
